How long until he is an $11-mill per year middle reliever? Are there any peripherals I am missing that indicate the overall results may improve?

last year, his fip and xfip were fine.

this year, he's made three starts. early indications aren't great, but there's still reason to think we aren't going to be cutting this guy in two months.

He's in the rotation until we have five more interesting options. Are we gonna demote him for Chris Rusin?

The only way I can see that happening anytime in the next few months is if Hendricks is ready to come up before Samardzija is dealt, and everyone is healthy.

Hendricks would have to put up absurd AAA numbers to push him out. Even then, they'd probably wait until July when one of Hammel or Shark is gone.

ETA: Arrieta would have to actually not suck in this scenario as well.

I want to go back to the day we signed anibel sanchez.

We all would, but it's clear that he was not signing with the Cubs. It sure would be nice, though, to have him and Samardzija at the top of the rotation.

I agree. He used meeting with the Cubs as leverage for the Tigers. I never really liked the Jackson signing to begin but I don't think he'll be put in the bullpen anytime soon. He's still got 2 years left on his deal after this season so they'd aren't getting rid of him either. It's still early so here is to hoping he turns things around.

Last year he pitched better then his record indicated but right now he's not pitching very well at all. Velocity is down and his pitch location isn't consistent.

last year part if his problem, and possibly why his peripherals looked ok, is that he can not hit a spot. When your entire defense is shifted because of a tendency and you continue throw pitches against that tendency, you will give up more hits than normal. He is the one starter who misses badly.

I know it's hard to quantify how many and how badly you miss spots but just watching him pitch, you can this happens way too much. That and I think he doesn't have the stuff to overcome some of those short comings anymore. I know with the Sox he was hitting 98, which is why they were toying with making him a closer before they dealt him.

His command of the fastball has been very bad. He's missing in the zone too much.

Just a quick level set:

As of today, ERA+ is 68, WHIP is 1.875, K/BB is 1.27, FIP is 3.82, and xFIP is 5.16.

:-&

EDIT: Ground ball % is 37% and BABIP is .396.
