I'm irrationally convinced that Epstein and Hoyer packed the team with guys in jobs a step above their abilities just to make sure there's no revolt about how bad the team is. Bonifacio's not going to complain because he's getting 500 PAs when he'd be lucky to get 200 anywhere else. Veras gets to rack up saves. Ruggiano's just happy to be in the bigs.

Being a lefty-masher bench outfielder is like musical chairs. There's a need for them, but there's more guys who can do it than there are jobs, too. He's a worthy big leaguer, but it wouldn't be hard to envision him jobless.

I want very much to keep him, but I can't even begin to imagine what kind of heist they could pull for 1.5 years of a good performing Samardzija after what they got for Garza.

I don't think he wants to stay, though, and I don't think the Cubs want to keep him. I'd put the odds at under 10%.

In the initial 5 year contract yes, but that's since run out (2011) and now he's on a new 1 year contract
