Before Bears coach Marc Trestman called practice short Monday afternoon after Martellus Bennett slammed first-round pick Kyle Fuller to the ground, a defensive player called the tight end out.

Bennett, as he's apt to do, was walking back to the huddle after a rep in team drills with the first-team offense. It's a distinctive strut and one he has had since day one a year ago.

"Run it back, run it back, run it back," the player said with Bennett walking the whole way.

You see, Bennett's practice habits aren't just disruptive when he erupts, upset that Fuller slung him to the ground by reaching in, grabbing at the ball and yanking. No one walks more when they're supposed to jog and jogs more when they're supposed to run after the play than Bennett.

In an up-tempo practice setting, he's the one in 22 that takes his time after the play is over. Bennett's lackadaisical approach does not go unnoticed by teammates and coaches, who long for more hustle and concentration from the veteran.

So another practice ended early after a scuffle. Bennett and Fuller this time (though mostly Bennett based on the video I saw). Football is a pretty intense sport and you have to figure scuffles in practice are common. Are there just a lot occurring or is Trestman quick to end practices early for it? I never remember hearing about so many practice fights.

Every single one has involved either Bennett or Lamarr Houston. The only ones I remember last year were Marty too, including taking on the entire secondary at one point last year. Martellus clearly has some issues. But it doesn't show up on game day.

Bennett's shtick was kind of funny off the bat but it's turned borderline jackass/annoying. Having said that, god forbid if it's an option between weirdo bennett or kellen davis

Man, [expletive] Kellen Davis. I feel/felt about him the way most Bears fans feel about Conte.

I still can't figure out how that ball went thru Conte's hands late in the GB game.

Actually now that you say that I think even though the first was between Houston and Mills, Bennett got involved, and the past two have been directly with him. Definitely some issues there. Hopefully guys like Cutler and Marshall can keep him relatively in check so he doesn't injure his own teammate because I'd hate for Britton to be our starting TE. Did he have these issues in Dal and NY?

Bennett not on the field for practice...possibly suspended by Trestman.

@ESPNChiBears

Still no sign of DE Jared Allen. Allen was excused for personal reasons on Monday.

A veteran revolt against the touchy feely Trestman style or just a couple of one off nothings?

he must flip a switch when he steps onto a football field because i can't really imagine that guy getting in a fight.

i'm certain of the fact that Fuller being a rookie was the main catalyst. Houston is a newcomer. it may have something to do with turf or initiation.

i don't think Allen would get mad because an offensive guy was suspended.

Houston is known to be a max effort guy. Actually, I think him and Bennett are opposites which is why the fights. I think Houston goes too hard at practice (and it's probably calmed down some since he's not been involved in anything for a week or so). And I think Bennett goes too soft and gets upset when someone is overdoing it in his eyes.

Basically if everyone goes 75% in practice, Houston goes 100%, Bennett goes 50%, so anytime someone is overly aggressive it's going to be an issue of "what are you doing? trying to hurt me?"

Edit: and this is no issue on game day because everyone is going 100% all the time.

Dammit I don't like how this camp is turning out.

And dammit Chicago media I want to like Bennett despite his issues, please don't run him out of town.

I didn't say anything about Allen responding to the suspension. He's been missing in action for a while, since before Bennett's latest issue. It was pretty clear last year that the veteran defenders did not buy-in to the new very un-Lovie style. I worry about the carry over into this season.

Bennett suspended indefinitely and fined an undisclosed amount. He's not even in Bourbonnais.

He was asked yesterday about getting fined and said, "I can afford it". But he seems like the type of player who a coach can "lose" by suspending him. Not really the type to change his attitude/personality to assimilate into the team. He said something about not going to camp to make friends.

Marquis Wilson had surgery to repair his clavicle. No timetable.

Who knows on the severity (and obviously one is football and the other is pitching in baseball) but I know Greinke had surgery and he was only out like a month.

You'd think throwing balls really hard takes a pretty hard toll on that area, too.

Rodgers went with no surgery, IIRC, and took, what, 2 months?

The way he worked it he won't have to be dealing with camp much at all.

Start a fight to end practice early, get suspended to avoid the dog days of August in camp.

Yep...my understanding has been that surgery actually decreases recovery time on this type of injury, but I'm far from a doctor.

Which would beg the question...why not always go for surgery if that's the case (specifically in the cases of pro athletes)?
