Boras doesn't like #PoorTomRickets

The Cubs were 15th in payroll this year at about $101 million. Boras said the Rickets family, which bought the team four years ago, has put too much emphasis on the redevelopment of Wrigley Field and not enough on major league payroll.

"You're developing the infrastructure, but fans don't come to see seats, grass, cement. They come to see players," he said. "They've done a great job in the draft and development and they've got a really good core of young players coming, but it is just not what's expected when you have a (family) buy a major-market club."

He also wants the Mets and Astros to spend more money, really shocking stuff.

So let me see here....

First Boras criticizes the Cubs for spending on the stadium instead of the players, saying that is what people come to see; then he turns right around and states the Rays need a new stadium because people aren't coming to see them....

He's right about the Cubs, people in Tampa won't see the Rays regardless of the stadium though. It might help the Rays' attendance short-term but it won't in the long-term.

He's not wrong that the cubs should spend more on the major league club.

But many people actually do come to see Wrigley.

It is declining though at a decent clip and likely to creep into the 30K per game range (paid admission), though. More importantly, viewership has fallen off the map. If you go from 40K to 32K in 5 years, there's an attendance problem and Boras is right as far as them spending more to help the improve the team on the field more so than stadium renovations.

Ricketts is making every Cubs fan pay for his crappy deal by having to endure a poorly constructed team with below avg. talent and bloated contracts while they slowly lose those contracts but not add much talent in the process on a lackluster team. Leaving the Cubs with similar lack of talent just less payroll to do so.

It's great that they have a plan of building from within but not addressing the current 25 man roster is going to stunt that development, you can sign quality players without have to give up picks...

ricketts should be commended for the attention he's paying to the stadium, which is long overdue, but bashed for not having the money to keep spending like a big market team while pouring money into the stadium. the previous ownership should be bashed for allowing wrigley to become dilapidated and for ignoring numerous revenue streams available to the club that other organizations have been taking advantage of.

What money has he poured into the stadium to date?

Plenty every year with much more to assuredly come?

Ordinary maintenance isn't really "long overdue."

I guess you haven't been paying attention.

Shocking from the guy with 10 million posts on Cubs sites a year who somehow didn't know the difference between Duane Underwood and Paul Blackburn...or that Mike Minor was a lefty...or who can't tell one Cubs Asian pitcher from the other.

You should add that one time I forgot Andy MacPhail wasn't the president anymore like a year after he'd been removed to your list there.

There's been a lot of talk about doing long overdue stadium renovations, but so far there've been very little in actual stadium renovations.

I don't think you can fault Ricketts for not following through on his renovation promises when his plans are approved by the city, and as far as I can recall are ready to go, but he's gotta fight rooftop owners and a piece of [expletive] Alderman who keeps trying to prevent them at all costs. I'm sure they've allocated funds for the renovations already, and all they can do is sit on it until Tunney and the scumbags lining his pockets play ball.

a real chicago boss would find a way to make tunney "disappear"
