And Matt Cooke is now in our division (MN). Great.

yeah, hopefully his next transgression doesn't come at the expense of a hawks player

Last year, the Minnesota Wild wowed their fans in free agency, scooping up the two hottest commodities on the market in Ryan Suter and Zach Parise and revitalizing the franchise.

This year, the Wild's haul wasn't quite as fan-pleasing. They signed Matt Cooke. Not everyone was into it.

With his divisive history -- which includes, among other injurious incidents, breaking the nose of a Wild defenceman with a sucker punch 11 years ago -- Cooke will be hard-pressed to win over hockey fans in Minnesota. That he's effectively replacing fan favourite Cal Clutterbuck compounds the issue.

So does Cooke's desire to wear No. 24, the number synonymous with the late Derek Boogaard.

Clutterbuck is a great hockey name but not the name of a great hockey player or even a good one. On purely skill, Cooke is much better at the hockey than Clutterbuck. As far as dirty play, Cooke is at least trying to put the past behind him.

Interesting but no surprising since they needed to cut salary, Blues traded Perron to Edmonton.

Which is funny because he's the exact type of player Edmonton doesn't need more of.

It's true, Cooke is far better. And he is trying to clean up his image but he's under a huge microscope. Like Torres he gets zero benefit of the doubt.

so, um, Ilya Kovalchuk retired.

wtf...at age 30?

Reading between the lines, looks like he wanted to go home to live in Russia.

He retired to get out of his NHL deal and will play in the KHL. Lamierello must be doing a backflip to get out from under that contract though a small cap penalty will apply for many years.

also, the devils still lose their first round pick next year because of him. ouch.

it seems bad now, and it probably (i do mean probably, as there's a reasonable chance they wind up a decent team anyway) has a pretty serious adverse affect on the team next year. however, a paltry cap penalty for a long time, a first round pick, and whatever salary he earned the past 3 years is a pretty great deal to get an elite scorer in his prime and then not have to worry about the backside of the contract. the good news for the devils is that they were an awesome puck possession team and kovalchuk didn't help drive that. their biggest problem last season was goaltending, and assuming cory schneider gets the bulk of the starts, that's a problem that won't repeat itself. IF they make smart moves over the next two weeks (like...sign mikhail grabovski and dustin penner, for instance), they could sneak in the back end of the playoffs. they're likely set up for a much better future than they would've had with kovalchuk. lou's a pretty smart guy and i think he just wiggled out of a mistake.

Jagr signs a 1-year deal with the Devils.

So much for him taking less money for a shot at the cup- unlesss someone really believes that the Devils are a good bet to win whatever they're calling the eastern conference now.

I saw and heard a lot of talk that it was strictly business and dollars for Jagr anymore. Fine. That's his right. And I didn't him anyway so don't care.

Poor Luongo....

At least the robbers were nice enough to leave me the car....#glasshalffull #blessed #sandwich pic.twitter.com/t4qUi1GarC

— Strombone (@strombone1) August 13, 2013

The Twitter humour continued as Eddie Lack, a Swedish goalie who ostensibly is meant to compete to be Luongo’s backup as a Canucks goaltender when training camp starts in September, tweeted “I DIDN’T DO IT I SWEAR!!!!!”

To which Luongo replied, “I know for a fact it wasn’t you cuz you’d probably still be out there trying to take the first tire off.”
