If you take out the one line about how it is "weird" that we ignore these guys (and he cited other teams/players here) and just read the other quotes, it doesn't seem at all like he wants it to happen.

"You would hope that there would be circumstances that you can entertain that discussion," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said Wednesday on the Kap and Haugh show. "I'm not sure we'll ever get there.

"I think any type of discussion along those lines will really have to balance how people feel about that, too. As you guys know, that issue brings up so many emotions with so many different people."

Ricketts said the team has not yet gone down the path of welcoming Sosa back to the club, but didn't rule out a reconciliation in the future.

"Who knows," Ricketts said. "Maybe at some point down the line, there's something that works. But honestly, it's just such a touchy thing and there'd have to be a lot of discussion before moving forward."

JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm 4m

Jed Hoyer #Cubs made it clear to us that their preference is to sign Jeff Samardzija rather than trade him as they keep working on it XM89

Saw this on Cubs Den. BA's Olt scouting report from a year ago.

Nothing new, but I guess it's nice to remember that this was being said about him a year ago...

With plus raw power and strong hitting approach, Olt is a threat to go deep anytime he steps to the plate. He works deep counts and piles up both walks and strikeouts, so his average will settle in the .260-.270 range...Scouts say Olt is a joy to watch defensively, owing to his agility and ability to make throws from any angle... A potential all-star, he could open 2013 in the big league lineup or get a couple of months in Triple-A.

We all know the story with the hitting...I liked reading that description of him in the field. I knew he was pretty good but hadn't heard he was quite that good.

Also, from that entry:

He certainly seems to be seeing the ball well. He has impressed the Cubs in practice and then yesterday hit an absolute bomb way beyond the LF fence. Back in November, we wondered whether Olt may be a key piece for the Cubs rebuilding process in 2014 in part due to some optimistic projections from Bill James that sees him as outproducing Luis Valbuena in 2014. Olt seems on the verge of providing us with an answer this spring.

Hoyer on Vitters:

We're going to put him in left field. He'll place some first. We feel good about our third base situation (list of non-Vitters people), but he's going to play left field.

I don't really have a better suggestion(since the available data doesn't have any further granularity), but "BABIP w/ shifts v. BABIP w/o shifts" seems like a......primitive way to measure shift effectiveness.

Therein lies the problem with defensive metrics in general. Perhaps ground ball outs v. Ground ball hits would be better, but there are far too many variables in play.

Well no, most advanced defensive metrics have a lot more detail in the source data. You could do far better here too if you simply had a table of all the individual shift events so you could account for player quality that's being shifted against and potentially for whether or not the shift impacted the batted ball result. Whoever aggregated this for THT didn't make that available though, so the BTBS writer has incomplete data to go on, even though it's feasible to get to complete data.

For an extra $5 you can get a version with a velvet painting of Ricketts getting a handy in the bleachers.

roast refused to sign off on it though so the guy doing it just looks like some rando

LOL - nicely done

EDIT: I met Roast working there once. I recognized him instantly and said hello. He looked terrified. I'm not that scary.

One of Fangraphs 10 bold predictions:

http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/brad-johnsons-10-bold-predictions/

5. Justin Ruggiano will accrue over 40 HR+SB

I’ve already stated on the record that 50 HR+SB are possible from Ruggiano with a 650 plate appearance season. Granted, I don’t really think 650 plate appearances is possible, but 500 could happen (there’s a fine line between bold and ludicrous). The assumption is that Ruggiano will platoon – probably with Ryan Sweeney. There’s also talk of trading Nate Schierholtz to make room for Ryan Kalish, but such a trade almost certainly means more playing time for Ruggiano.

Ruggiano also benefits from escaping Miami. He’ll bat in the middle of the lineup in a stadium where home runs happen. The Cubs also have an incentive to let him accrue as many plate appearances as possible so as to inflate his mid-season trade value. A trade would actually be bad news for this projection, which is part of the reason why I didn’t try to stretch to 50 HR+SB.

I just can't shake this feeling that he's going to be very good.

He better be, because the Olt thing is rapidly deflating and I need one...JUST [expletive] ONE...extra good thing to happen for the Cubs right now.

Starlin's gonna be back to being a 3-win player, if that counts.
