Jason McLeod must REALLY like Jimenez and Torres.

Or they REALLY like someone who is 15 right now, right (and therefore don't want to deal with penalties next year)?

I wonder if there's any of those uber prospects on the horizon.

It's possible but the Rangers just blew through their cap space and appear to be accepting the penalty for next year. Can't imagine they'd do that if they knew there was a stud out there next year.

Yeah, I overlooked that angle.

While true, its also entirely plausible that that kid hasn't emerged yet either. A full year of development in a kid that may actually be 14 right now, could be gigantic.

What are the penalties that the Rangers should be expecting? Just fines?

Can't sign anybody for over 250k next year or something, IIRC.

Eloy down to the Cubs and Rangers?

If true, we're fucked. What motivation do the Rangers have not to outbid us at this point?

Relationships established by the Cubs with Jimenez, his family and buscon.

I mean, yeah. But what's that compared to an extra 100k?

The Cubs have probably had a handshake agreement with Jimenez for awhile now.

Well, Felix Hernandez and Miguel Cabrera accepted less to sign with the Mariners and Marlins than the Yankees were offering.

This is where the new academy should help too.

Did I miss something? Is there something linking the Rangers to him at this point or is it just the "they're already paying penalties, might as well go all in" thing?

Given what Badler, McDaniel and Sanchez have said, I believe this is this the case.

Kind of both. I heard something on another website from an ABTY type of source.

That's comforting.

As lukewarm (at best) as I am on the trades today, it would really suck to have made those moves and then lose him to the Rangers deciding to go the go nuts every other year route.

Obviously, the FO likes Jimenez a ton, I would think they have alternative plans though, if he goes elsewhere. Plenty of top names left to spread it around on.

how the [expletive] does a beat writer for a major league baseball team make this mistake?

That's a rhetorical question, right?

Did Torreyes have to be added to the 40 to avoid the Rule 5 this year?
