ps that team would suck.

Middlebrooks had an OPS+ of 117 before he got hurt. Jed Lowrie sits at 116, Pedroia - 101, Rizzo - 120, Reddick - 123. Granted Lavarnway hasn't played much in the big leagues this year, and Ellsbury and Kalish have been hurt most of the season. But that lineup doesn't suck.

A team constructed solely of homegrown players would indeed suck, and the process of having that team built would be awful for Cubs fans.

He made it clear they joked about it and it is impossible.

I think it would be extremely difficult to pull something like that off. Your scouting and player developement would have to be off the charts elite better than everyone else caliber and even then would have to have a lot of just plain luck for the pieces to all fall in place. never mind that it would take a very very long time to do it. I think the plan is to build a core of homegrown young talent they've stated that in the past. Then you augment that with trades and free agents till you get the right mix.

We'll have to be active in FA. We won't be able to field a roster or have a major league payroll without doing so. But you're gonna see shorter deals and more "cost effective" deals for the time being I think.

We have to spend on the ML roster because we're limited on what we can spend on amateurs now. Unless Ricketts decides to just hord money for a Wrigley reno, which I suppose is possible, we'll spend a relatively large amount.

But the billboard for this coming winter might as well be David DeJesus, the first free agent signed by the Epstein administration. Because all indications are that the Cubs still don’t have the appetite for megadeals.

Why do so many people think these are the only two options in FA? Not all contracts given out are either bargain basement or megadeals. There is a middle ground.

I think the takeaway from that statement is that we'll probably never sign one of the mega free agent, 10 year contracts. It's pretty clear they think those are the worst values in baseball, and I think he's right.

I don't really see that interpretation, honestly. That may very well be the case, but the "still don't have the appetite" strikes me as Mooney saying we'll only sign guys like David DeJesus this offseason because we're not ready to sign guys to Pujolsesque contracts.

My point was that there are contracts and players in between DeJesus and Pujols, but too many people don't seem to realize that.
