I'm happy about that for two reasons:

1) It's a neat honor for Barney and well-deserved.

2) If the Theo regime does choose to trade/shop Barney, being able to market him as a "gold glove second baseman" does nothing but increase his value.

the latter is very much how i feel about all the post-season awards. if you're looking to trade the guy, they're great, but if you want to keep him, they probably only make him marginally more expensive.

I'm not sure how much stock GMs put in gold glove awards. They're mostly won on reputation. I'd hope most GMs would know better than to think it meant anything. I suppose it probably is a nice selling point to the fans and media though.

In this case, it might bolster a reputation that's pretty new and not out there as much yet. Gets his name out more.

Barney was a great defender last year too, and I'm not sure that many people were aware of it.

That's true. Though I'd rather they market him as a potential SS where his bat plays a lot better.

Camp Colvin or whatever the new name is helped out a ton here. He wore down last year pretty badly. His July was very solid this year and while his August was bad, he's finishing up like a star. If Theo was looking at him as a utility guy on a good team, there has to be doubt at this stage. He's a definite starter for someone. The question for us is how do we feel about him 3-5 years from now? If the bat is possible to improve just a tad(give me a .725 OPS), forget trading him. Lock him in for 5 years now.

My guess is the Friedman/Theo/Cashman/etc upper echelon of GMs don't put any stock into the postseason awards, but the majority of GMs are still more of the traditional variety and, thus, really like the labeled players - "leadoff hitter", "all-star", "gold glover", "closer", etc.

A gold glove for Barney is something I think Theo could take advantage of.

I still think the gold glove helps even if he's marketed as a SS (probably the smart thing to do). Other teams would see that he's been playing second basically his entire time in Chicago and would have questions whether he can be a full-time defensive SS. If he wins the GG, it makes the argument a bit easier (to the GMs who value those awards) market him as a great defender and, thus, a guy who can make the transition well to SS.

Darwin Barney won the fielding bible award for best defensive 2B, FWIW

SECOND BASE—DARWIN BARNEY, CHICAGO CUBS (96 POINTS)

Darwin Barney led all second basemen in Defensive Runs Saved with 28. Closest to him were Robinson Cano and Alexi Casilla with 15. Barney secured 96 points, only 4 points short of a unanimous win. The 2011 Fielding Bible Award winner, Dustin Pedroia, was runner up in 2012 with 82 points.

I know managers and coaches vote for the winner, but how are candidates decided upon? And were there really 10 AL teams with full time catchers who played worse defense than A.J. Pierzynski?

Officially nominated for the GG today. Almost sure to get screwed over by Phillips' flashiness.

I'm pretty sure he'll win. He being Barney.

n fact, second baseman Darwin Barney already might have won the Cubs’ postseason haul for the year, if a casual survey of opposing NL managers on Gold Glove voting means anything.

Four out of five polled in recent weeks say they already cast their votes for Barney to win his first Gold Glove.

The fifth hadn’t voted but suggested he was leaning toward Barney.

Another, Reds manager Dusty Baker, declined to reveal his vote. But considering he can’t vote for his own guy — two-time defending Gold Glove second baseman and preseason favorite Brandon Phillips — his vote shouldn’t hurt Barney’s chances, at least.

Either way, if there’s any drama for the Cubs in the chilled air of fast-approaching autumn, it might be the battle for the hardware between the league’s top two fielding second basemen.

Each manager and coach in the league gets a Gold Glove vote, and in a change this year, Major League Baseball included with the ballots detailed position-by-position fielding-stat breakdowns through Aug. 30 for all qualifiers — which highlighted Barney’s NL-record errorless streak (now 133 games) and impressive ‘‘ultimate zone rating per 150 games.’’

‘‘I voted for Barney,’’ Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. ‘‘Phillips has obviously been the guy that you measure him against. He’s been steady; he’s made all the routine plays and made some above-average plays.’’

Said Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson, a three-time Gold Glove second baseman: ‘‘On reputation, I looked at Phillips of Cincinnati. He’s a little flashier. I’m more of a steady-Eddie type of guy. And I voted for Barney. Anybody that can have only one error at this point in the season. …’’

My brother-in-law, who is a HUGE Reds fan, said he would be pissed if Phillips didn't win the Gold Glove. He went on to say it would make him think the whole award is a sham. I had to hold back my laughter.

When I asked why Phillips should win, even though Barney has better defensive stats across the board, he brought up the fact that Phillips does more with the bat AND plays great defense.
