Execs of 2 teams who spoke to Cubs this week say they're mentioning Bryan LaHair's name regularly in trade talks. Since 5/15: .220/.278/.341

Was surprised when I didn't see any thread in here re: LaHair, and if there is one and I missed it, my b.

"They're" as in the execs are mentioning Lahair or the Cubs are?

No real surprise, LaHair doesn't fit into our long-term plans and does have some value to other teams needing a LH platoon power bat. Add to that the fact that he's cheap for a long time certainly adds to his value.

I wonder if the Cubs are looking to trade him on his own or attach him to a Dempster or Garza deal.

I don't know what LaHair would command on his own.

I would love to see him go on a 2 week tear right now.

We're facing 7 righties in our next 9 games.

I certainly won't complain if he's starting at one of the corner outfield spots next year, but I think you look at his BABIP and the fact that he can't hit lefties and realize that he probably won't ever be this good again. He also won't have much range in the OF, though at least by the eye test so far, he's not Adam Dunn out there. Hopefully some team looks at him as "All-Star Bryan LaHair."

Also, I had it in my head for a while that LaHair would just be our LFer next season, but Soriano has surprised the hell out of me this season. Maybe have some work done on his knee this offseason and he can return. Moving him for a few million and crappy prospects probably isn't worth as much as protecting Rizzo and being Starlin's buddy, especially with how low our payroll might be.

Still think our best bet for a LaHair deal is some sort of small-mid market club that is in it and looking for power. Specifically, I'm thinking about a club like the Indians (or the A's), but both clubs will probably wait a week or two to see if they stick around in the race. The Orioles are another club that I wonder about.

@Plesac19: #reds have confirmed Joey Votto to be out about 2 weeks, having surgery to repair meniscus issue in knee. Not considered serious.

Hmm, could this be an opening? As much as LaHair isn't fit to hold Joey Votto's jock strap, he could be the best option as a 2 week fill in for the Reds. 2 weeks is a long time to go without your top hitter. After Votto's back, LaHair can be a bat off the bench, and ultimately take over LF be it this season or next. Basically, a cheaper Ludwick.

no one gives up anything of value for two weeks. Even if it was two weeks of Babe Ruth.

Actually, this makes a ton of sense. The Reds need a lefty pinch hitter off the bench. The only two left handed hitters on the entire roster are Votto and Bruce. To have LaHair off the bench when Votto comes back makes it more than a two-week trade for the Reds. It's why they have been trying to get Mark Kotsay.

If they're looking at him as a bench guy, they're certainly not going to give us enough of a return to make it worthwhile. They're just not a good fit.

They really could be, though. Like I said, Ludwick's their current LF, and rather than rebsign him, they could probably get similar production from LaHair from the left side. They also have Heisey who could spell him vs. lefties. It just depends what that's worth to them. The Votto injury just makes it good timing.

No, they really aren't a good match. They aren't giving up any of their valuable prospects for him just so he can be a platoon LF, and LaHair's overstated value can probably better suited going to a different team who actually needs a first baseman rather than a stopgap platoon player. He has zero value to the Reds.

It is in the Cubs best interest NOT to trade LaHair to the Reds because there's literally no good return for his value that they'd be willing to give up. It's a silly idea.

I went up to the game in Cincinnati tonight with my wife and her family. On our way back I tuned into the Reds postgame show. The host of the show claimed that "there are credible rumblings among those with knowledge of the situation" that Sean Casey(!) is coming out of retirement to play 1st in Votto's absence. I really thought the guy was joking at first but he stuck to it. Then he took a parade of calls talking about how great that would be. He even berated some guy who called to make fun of the whole idea (the guy led with a Tony Perez joke which amused me greatly).

So, I guess according to WLW's postgame host "those with knowledge of the situation" would say the Reds aren't interested in LaHair. Obviously I think that guy is completely insane, but holy [expletive] it would be awesome if he were actually right.

allegedly the pirates are looking at billy butler, if that falls through, could lahair be on their radar?

Maybe in the same sense that if Matt Garza falls through for the Dodgers, Casey Coleman could be on their radar?
