Not long before Jason Marquis became the 10th different starting pitcher for the Padres in a season not yet one week into June, manager Bud Black announced that he'll reach into the bullpen for the 11th, tabbing Andrew Cashner to start Saturday's game at Milwaukee.

"We'll see how it goes," said Black. "Ideally, he'll pitch into the third inning, and if his pitch count is down, we'll see where that goes."

We've all been to this rodeo before. Good luck, Andrew.

I have the o/u set on 4.5 starts before he gets shut down with an injury.

If they control the innings, I think this is an excellent idea. The talk was that they planned on making Cashner a starter next season. With the way their season is going, might as well get the process started, and if the innings get too high, then they can shut him down in August/September, and be ahead of the game on making him a starter next year (or if he sucks as a starter, then they can move him permanently to the pen and have a better idea on the makeup of their staff for 2013).

He's had one average start and one really good start in the minors, both games against Corpus Christi. Going to be interesting to see if the can find the form he had in 2010.

6 no-hit innings so far, 9 K

we've made a huge mistake

Cashner has an amazing arm. I am not surprised by this. Still, I am obviously happy with the trade, but wished we had another arm like Cashner in the system.

cubs fans will be unbearable if cashner has some really good starts and rizzo starts off slow.

I seriously doubt most average Cubs fans even remember he exists. It would require dicks like Sullivan or Kaplan to lead the charge.

i'm more pissed that we mistreated colvin last year (after he posted good numbers in 2010, OH MY GOD HE'S THE FLUKIEST PLAYER THAT EVER FLUKED AND CAN NEVER BE GOOD EVER) and then traded him for a guy who has sucked before he went on the 60-day and may never be able to grasp a bat again.

his OPS is .916 this year, btw.

It's cool. Rizzo's white, so he'll have to struggle for a while before those guys start criticizing the trade.

Not sure whether it was discussed anywhere here before, and not sure of the accuracy of the gun, but San Diego fans were gushing about Cashner when he was hitting 102 MPH as a relief pitcher earlier this year.

I'm guessing the gun needed to be re-calibrated.

102 seems a little high for sure. But to add my $0.02, I saw Cash hit 101 on the stadium gun at Citi Field when the Cubs visited the Mets last September. Again, stadium guns have a way of being...not accurate, but I have little to no doubt that Cash can hit triple digits if he wants to.

I saw him hit 101 on the gun when he was in AA whilst playing against the Bay Bears. That was quite a while ago, though, but him hitting 100+ is not out of the ordinary as far as I know.

He just left in the 3rd due to injury. Not sure what the injury is yet.

A couple of tweets said it was his elbow. Threw a pitch to the backstop then asked to be removed.

Wow, I hope that doesn't end up being true.
