Nothing like a little white dude with intangibles to tug at the heart strings of Cub fans.

He's somewhere between a Doug Dascenzo and a high-ceiling Dave Roberts.

I'm not sure what a high ceiling Dave Roberts would be. Willie Wilson? Rajai Davis? I'd say that would be his absolute ceiling, but Joey Gathright is a more realistic scenerio.

There's no way Campana leaps a car length-wise.

As long as he's cheap, he's perfectly fine for what he is. I'd certainly take him over giving Reed Johnson or a similar player another 1.25 mil. He's a great fielder and set of legs, but what it comes down to is that unless he can work on getting the OBP higher, and more complete players like Jackson, Sappelt, Szczur, and maybe Ha and Andreoli coming up behind him in the not too distant future, he'll be on borrowed time and likely be kicked around the league for the next several years between AAA and the bigs.

Do the stats back that? I know there is a pretty small sample size. I hear people say that he is a great fielder all the time, but is that just because he is fast and hustles? Or is he really a good fielder?

There are no fielding stats (not even the newer ones) that are accurate...for outfielders...

You cant judge him much fastre he is than Sori..How many more balls he'd get to.

Sometimes just getting to the ball stops the runner.

You can only use the 'eye-test on that..

He has speed that takes away hits..obviously and his arm is average.

But you are right, in my mind. his sample size is VERY small.

He's been used as a bit player until now and he hasnt played as much as we think he has...

Dale has been patient with him the last week..as Dale has been with Ian Stewart..who has much more of a track record ..

For the record..I'd play him against right handers and use him as the 'bench weapon' when lefties start.

If Sori is moved this year..LaHair will go to left and Tony would be the late inning 'caddy'

did you transcribe these thoughts from a ticker tape machine in your abdomen?

Ha. Another gritty little white guy that comes to mind is Ryan Freel. He had some very good years with Cincinatti, although he was rather useless by the time we got him. He took a lot more walks than Tony though. I believe he might have been mental as well but I forget the specifics.

Freel had 150 points of OPS on Campana and the ability to hit homers for a few years. Of course, he was a drunk, and maybe Tony Campana on juice, who knows.

Your writing style is ... interesting?

But the questions still stand..

By the way...Didnt you used to play strong safety for the Colts, Bob?

I know what you're saying. I mean that in the sense that he's gritty and gives it his all ala Reed Johnson, Sam Fuld , and various other small white guys that managers and casual fans love.

Setting his race and your prejudice of Cub fans aside...(we liked that slap hitting white boy Juan Pierre, too :D ) ...the questions still stand...

...and an additional thought..

Is it 'message board logic' to bad mouth guys like Aramis Ramirez for NOT hustling

and ridicule admiration for the Tony Campanas FOR hustling..?

If you look down a few posts, I also brought up white boys Willie Wilson, Rajai Davis, and Joey Gathright as potential comps.

As for "hustling", the Aramis Ramirezes of the world don't have to go overboard on it because they bring value to their team without crashing into walls and bending their hat brims, or bending their body in half ala Rick Ankiel (that one still makes me cringe). Natural talent>>>>>>>>>grittyness/playing the game right/giving it your all. This isn't to say that they should stand their and watch their deep fly ball only to end up being thrown out at 2nd, but it's in neither their own nor the teams best interest for them to crash into things and potentially get injured.

That's a good point...and Tony still acts like a rookie..'overhustling' if that's a word

I just thought he guy Campana most resembles in the major leagues is Juan Pierre.

That's what he's shooting for and Pierre did contribute significantly to winning teams.

..and while I wouldnt deny that casual (read: female) Cub fans do like the 'little white guys'

We just went through a few years when we (I know I did) disliked more talented players than Campana who didnt hustle. I think we see the faults of players when they're here and their value when their gone. I dont want Ramirez back. Id rather have the out of control hustler than the talented underachieveing slow-rider, wouldnt you?

Still, returning to the questions, I admit I dont know what to do with Campana. I agree exactly..his OBP is the problem and its a thought process of how to reach base that maybe he needs to work that out in the minor leagues except that he DID work it out there. Its here that's the problem. At least right now.

I would suggest that even Dale S. isnt sure how to use him.

Which was why I put it out here for comedians and analysts alike.

Juan Pierre has had a mighty 2.8 WAR over the last 7 seasons. That's cumulative. He had a nice run 3 of his first 4 full seasons, but since then he's been squat. Edited by Sammy Sofa

I'll take the out of control hustler is he's better at baseball, otherwise give me the talented underachiever.

BTW, Juan Pierre his only season in Chicago? 1.8 bWAR

There are plenty of non female down state white guys who enjoy a good hustly, plays the game right and doesn't wear long pants type of player. There is also nothing feminine about these guys at all.
