Do the stats back that? I know there is a pretty small sample size. I hear people say that he is a great fielder all the time, but is that just because he is fast and hustles? Or is he really a good fielder? I know what you're saying. I mean that in the sense that he's gritty and gives it his all ala Reed Johnson, Sam Fuld , and various other small white guys that managers and casual fans love. Setting his race and your prejudice of Cub fans aside...(we liked that slap hitting white boy Juan Pierre, too :D ) ...the questions still stand... ...and an additional thought.. Is it 'message board logic' to bad mouth guys like Aramis Ramirez for NOT hustling and ridicule admiration for the Tony Campanas FOR hustling..? If you look down a few posts, I also brought up white boys Willie Wilson, Rajai Davis, and Joey Gathright as potential comps. As for "hustling", the Aramis Ramirezes of the world don't have to go overboard on it because they bring value to their team without crashing into walls and bending their hat brims, or bending their body in half ala Rick Ankiel (that one still makes me cringe). Natural talent>>>>>>>>>grittyness/playing the game right/giving it your all. This isn't to say that they should stand their and watch their deep fly ball only to end up being thrown out at 2nd, but it's in neither their own nor the teams best interest for them to crash into things and potentially get injured. That's a good point...and Tony still acts like a rookie..'overhustling' if that's a word I just thought he guy Campana most resembles in the major leagues is Juan Pierre. That's what he's shooting for and Pierre did contribute significantly to winning teams. ..and while I wouldnt deny that casual (read: female) Cub fans do like the 'little white guys' We just went through a few years when we (I know I did) disliked more talented players than Campana who didnt hustle. I think we see the faults of players when they're here and their value when their gone. I dont want Ramirez back. Id rather have the out of control hustler than the talented underachieveing slow-rider, wouldnt you? Still, returning to the questions, I admit I dont know what to do with Campana. I agree exactly..his OBP is the problem and its a thought process of how to reach base that maybe he needs to work that out in the minor leagues except that he DID work it out there. Its here that's the problem. At least right now. I would suggest that even Dale S. isnt sure how to use him. Which was why I put it out here for comedians and analysts alike.
