the Cardinals fielded a team full of guys with significant injury concerns; it'd be really ignorant for their fans to complain about them as if they are some unforeseen misfortune

Berkman's replacement, the torrid AAA hitter Matt Adams is reported to be quite the fastball hitter. Had a couple of base knocks in his debut last nite.

i was really hoping he would retire after getting hit in the head by a pitch and collapsing on the ground only to have the umpire think he was faking it again and throw his unconscious body out of the game, but i guess this will do

The pros:

23 with a career .318 .366 .558 .924 line. Shows great hand eye coordination with a 16.3% K rate and hammers the ball; career .240 ISO. Remarkably consistent.

2009 RK, A-: .355 .400 .547 .947

2010 A: .310 .355 .541 .896

2011 AA: .300 .357 .566 .923

2012 AAA: .340 .375 .603 .978

Cons:

Listed at 6-3 230.

He's fat. Currently in the best shape he's ever been in and he's easily 260.

Has negative value in every aspect of the game outside of his bat, and is limited to 1b/DH only. 6.2% non IBB walk rate is worrisome for a guy with a career .318 BA and .558 SLG, and he hasn't improved on it in MiLB:

09 - 6.4%

10 - 5.9%

11 - 6.5%

12 - 5.9%

Small sample size, but has been chewed up and spit out by advanced arms, highlighting his poor BB rate. .733 OPS and 28/3 K/BB in the 2011 AFL. .825 OPS (thanks to 2 early HR against MILB guys) with a 10/1 K/BB in ST.

My opinion:

.280 .320 .480 .800

2 WAR

Poor walk rate that has shown no improvement makes him a flash in the pan type guy, as I don't think he's athletic enough to become Vladimir Guerrero.

I think more poetic justice would be the Cardinals having to bring him in to pitch in an 18-inning marathon only to have a batter hit a line drive off of his head, and then all that awesome stuff you just said.

Can the pitch be a bullet?

I think pitching a baseball would probably have more of an effect than pitching a bullet.

Berkman, Schmerkman. The Cards just signed a former first round pick and top prospect who will surely reach his ceiling with them.

•The Cardinals signed outfielder Lou Montanez, according to the CBSSports.com transactions page. Montanez, 30, was released by the Phillies earlier this month. The outfielder struggled in 17 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, hitting just .136/.264/.159 in 53 plate appearances.
