How about instead of having a closer we just treat the 9th inning as another inning and put out whoever is well-rested and can get 3 outs without giving up the tie/lead?

Following that philosophy, the mound would be empty.

this is nice in theory, but never works. ever.

12 man staff, every man for himself. Each guy closes his own start, no matter what. Forget relief pitching, righty versus lefty, pitch counts, all of it. If you can't go 9, every time out when you're pitching on a minimum 12 days rest, you don't belong on a major league roster. Oh, and if we wind up going extra innings? Our pitchers will be taught to be more economical, pitching to contact. Not a problem. The Cubs Way is highlighted and it's "Finish your own isht"

Most teams without a closer will try it until one guy emerges as the top option. The Cardinals tried it for a while last season. Turned out OK for them.
