why sign a promising 19 year old pitcher when that money can be spent on the 2012 equivalent of Jeromy Burnitz?

At best a 4 or 5 starter for 7M. Who is what 3-4 years away? Prior cost less.

Prior cost money and the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. That's a ton more.

and obviously he was worth it. He was major league ready. This guy is projected as crap.

Yeah, a 19 year old 6'2 lefty who throws low 90's, has 4 pitches, projection left, and was ROY in the main Cuban league as an 18 year old is absolute crap.

Look at his stats. I didn't say he's crap, but he's not a stud. He's going to be (hopefully) a 4 or 5 starter. Nothing to get excited over.

Obviously the Cubs aren't spending $7 million on a 19-year old if they feel he's a 4 or 5 starter.

Then they are stupid because that's what he'll be.

Why? Because we're the Cubs? Or because Baseball America said so? Gotta be one or the other, right?

I'm pretty sure Theo, Jed and the gang are better at prospect analysis than you are.

We care about an 18-year-old's stats now? Might as well look at high-school numbers.

Obviously not. 7M says we don't/

Cc, you're trolling us, right? If not, what was your offseason plan? Did you want Pujols or Fielder at their pricetags? Darvish?

yeah. it beats spending money on unknowns.

No it doesn't. Flushing $7 milllion down the toilet would be more better than signing Prince Fielder to the contract he got.

We're a better major league team right now than we were last year. We've improved our system bigtime as well. And we've done it spending a lot less than we did last season. I feel confident we'll sign at least one and maybe both of Cespedes and Soler as well. Kind of an awesome start to Theo's reign, in my opinion.

We'll lose more games than last year.

The Cubs have downgraded at 1B 3B and lost a valuable setup man. They've upgraded in RF and the starting rotation is vastly improved over the Coleman/Lopez/Davis/Ortiz mess accounting for 40% of our starts last year.

Garza/Dempster/Byrd trades could change things of course, but the Cubs aren't really any worse off now than they were last season... and the farm system is slowly making significant improvements.

Seems to me that the Cubs have plenty of crap pitchers on the 40 man roster they can drop to make room for Concepcion so that doesn't seem like a big deal to me. They can start with Andy Sonnanstine and work their way down from there.

The 40 man problem isn't immediate, but it's coming soon. McNutt, Brett. Rhee, Antigua, Ha, Struck, Rusin, guys we may acquire in a Garza, Byrd, Soto, Marmol, or Dempster deal. College guys we may draft that move quickly. It COULD get full quickly. Don't get me wrong, not all these guys will make it obviously, but we're getting close to the pointt where we'll start dealing away some guys. Probably within a year or so.

Anyone else hear a young Ted Lilly in the scouting report? Throws across the body...average to above average velocity from a lefty...curveball that can flatten out at times...throws a cutter already. Just throwing it out because it's baseball talk and I miss basbeall.

While Goldstein had Concepcion at 6, Ben Badler doesn't think he belongs in the top 10:

@BenBadler Don't think I'd put him in their top 10 RT @MattDWhitaker any idea where Concepcion fits into the #Cubs top 10 if at all?

Yes. Collect and spend to collect better things...Ever check out how much prime star+ talent can hit the MLB FA market over the next 3-4 years? No doubt Justin Upton will eventually be traded...Felix Hernandez....A Zimmerman? That'd be sweet, especially the 3B one....Tim Lincecum...Stud talent will hit the trade market because teams might prefer the prospects to the picks. There will be a Josh Beckett trade. Maybe even two if Luck and Skill keep having threesomes with Theo.

I feel like we say this every few years, and they have a way of working themselves out. Most of those guys will be close to worthless by the time it should become a real problem.

In the rather far-fetched scenario that we run out of 40-man space and have worthwhile prospects that need to be rostered but can't, I'm sure it won't be hard to find teams that will give us solid value for those guys in a trade.
