How valuable is Vitters ability to make contact and put the ball in play?

I am not a huge advanced stats person at all, but assuming he could hit .275 and cut down on the Ks a bit with his ability to put the ball in play how valuable is that over the course of a season? As in moving runners, getting runners in from 3rd, etc.

Every report I read on Vitters is that he can literally hit anything and put anything in play which hurts his overall average. He's still very young and should hit very well in the PCL, but assuming his approach at the plate is never completely fixed; does that ability to consistently put the ball in play give the team value?

A rough rule of thumb is that a contact out averages .05 runs more than a strikeout. You gain some extra bases advanced and you also add some double plays, and it almost balances out.

So if he strikes out 50 times a year, that's maybe worth two runs more than a similar player who strikes out 90 times a year.

Thanks.

Hopefully Vitters tears up the PCL.

I'd like to know what people think Vitters' slash line will look like at Iowa. I'm assuming that he'll be at Iowa all year playing 3B everyday for the most part. Given the hitter friendly environment coupled with a solid year at Tennessee I'm thinking he'll go 300/340/480/820

Any thoughts?

I'd be disappointed with that line from any actual prospect in Iowa.

Iowa line: .330/.365/.600

MLB line: .280/.325/.450

I like Vitters more than I should (I secretly believe he can top that MLB line), but I like the tools man. There's LITERALLYZ nothing wrong with the swing, and he'll get hit by pitches. If he learns to swing at strikes ten it's game over man, game over.

Can he stick at 3rd though, that's the real question. Your MLB line would be good for 3rd base. For left field, not as much.
