I also wonder if this was Emery's way of saying, "Lovie if you don't win, I'm bringing in my own coach and going back to my 3-4 roots from NE and KC".

To me, there's no wondering about it at all. This is exactly what the McClellin pick says. In that sense at least, I like the message it sends. I'm just not seeing where McClellin is particularly outstanding at any of the various things he does. He does many things well, from what I can see, but any of them at a potential top level? On that I'm far more dubious.

If Kiper is right, the Bears got the best undrafted free agent available: They announced that they signed Brown after the draft.

Brown started 38 games at left tackle for Troy, but many observers of his performance at the Senior Bowl and Scouting Combine came away thinking he lacks the quickness to deal with NFL pass rushers and translates better to guard at the next level. He’s a project, but he’s a project that the Bears have to feel good about getting without having to spend a draft pick on him.

It's not the draft I was expecting, but they did address most of the positions I wanted to see addressed. I'm actually kind of interested in this Rodriguez kid. Sulley already mentioned it in his summary, but as I was getting caught up on this thread, Dallas Clark was the guy I thought of with that pick. Jay has to be thrilled with this offseason. While the protection level is probably still a concern, big tall receivers that can go up and get it and a quick fullback/TE and tailback that can catch bail out throws and get yardage downfield is really going to spread opposing defenses and take a little pressure off the OLine.

I don't believe the team needed stand out talent in this draft as much as they needed to fill needs at key positions with quality talent, and I believe they accomplished that. Tice must trust that the line he currently has (and if healthy) will continue to get better with more experience. I would still consider picking up McNeill on the cheap if he is still available. Even if he needs more time to get healthy, he's a guy you can plug in immediately when that day does happen and he's miles better than anyone they have.

Next offseason, OLine, LB and CB will likely be the biggest positions of need to address.

My only real disappointment this offseason was losing Okoye.

I wonder how Hester fits into this upcoming season. I suppose he and Knox were somewhat interchangeable downfield speedsters, and as long as Knox is not healthy (or if he never returns), Hester still has some value as a wide out.

I just want a headline that the Bears signed Jim Brown as a free agent.

I wonder if that would piss off Forte, too.

Jeremy Jones has some stupid @ss stats. Played FS and CB for Wayne St. Put up 106 tackles, 12.5 TFL, with 9 INTs. I don't know if he's an NFL caliber player, but I figured the Bears had the leg up to sign him as Emery is a Wayne State alum.

Cutler, Forte, Marshall, Bush, Jeffery, Bennett, Rodriguez.

This offense could be extremely fun to watch this year.

Of course Webb will be protecting Cutler's blindside.

Perhaps having better WRs will allow Cutler to get rid of the ball faster, thus lessening the pressure on guys like Webb? Probably wishful thinking.

Brad Biggs appears to be guessing the Chris Williams may move to tackle.

Also on the next page of the same article, when Tice is defending Webb, you can see where he's getting some Martz digs in there...

“Here is what I saw with him: Second-year player playing one side one year and one side another,” Tice said. “I thought he was adequate. I thought his consistency grade -- how many times does he block his guy – his consistency grade was actually solid. What grade was bad was the critical errors, the sacks, penalties, not really a ton of quarterback hits. When he made a critical error, everyone knew what it was. But, what you look at is the development of a second-year, seventh-round draft pick. Is he a guy we can move forward and win with?

Well, if you change your drops and you’re not always in the deep drops. If you change your philosophy of making sure the guy gets chip help from a back or a tight end. If you change and move the release point of the quarterback, you’re going to already make him better without making him better. And then you have an entire offseason and now you have a chance to make him better there. So there are two ways I just told you we can get him better in. And then already I think he is a very good run blocker. That is an area that doesn’t get talked about. Do I think he is the guy moving forward? Yes, I do unless some miracle happens and an elite first-round pick that we couldn’t pass up fell in our lap which I doubt. Yeah, he’s our guy moving forward.”

Interesting comments on page 4 about Brown, the UFA OT from Troy, as well.

On a positive note, getting James Brown sort of nullified the 5th round pick they lost by trading up to get Jeffery. Not sure how Kiper and Mayock can rate him as high as the 5th best Tackle on draft day when it's most likely he doesn't project as a pro level tackle, but it's nice to have such a high rated talent to add to the mix on the line anyway.

From the sounds of it there was some serious off field issues preventing him from being drafted. Biggs sort of spelled it out that the guy probably won't make team.

Getting rid of Martz' playbook and adding receivers that can get open should improve the line play. The 7 step drop was something that just won't work with a fairly slow footed LT like Webb. Even though Cutler was never afraid to take a hit in the pocket waiting for a receiver to get open, he needs quicker developing plays to keep these defenses honest.

It might keep jay alive longer but it won't make a bad line good. And this is a bad line.

Bummer. Simply amazing that so many guys leave tons of money on the table due to off field issues. A chance to work for 8-10 years and retire comfortably for the rest of your life or asking if you want fries with that seems like it would make these kids stay out of trouble. That has to be a tough pill to swallow several years from now when they are still dealing with those off field issues that kept them from getting drafted at all, and you know you had the talent to start on just about any NFL team had you kept your nose clean.

On a happier note, someone stepping aside for off field issues is making someone else's life much better for at least a little while.

These guys are still college kids, and college kids are, by and large, stupid.

Brilliant

Take the only good lineman from last years team, switch him to a position he is weaker at, and have him backing up. Just a terrific idea.
