Carlos Beltran

He hasn't been discussed much if at all, probably because he's a 34 year old OF'er with a history of injuries. That being said, he was very good last year (.300 / .385 / .525 = .910; 152 OPS+) and apparently isn't drawing a ton of interest (Rockies are rumored to be going after him and/or Cuddyer).

 

I know Thoyer wants "long term assets", but if you could clear Soriano via trade, would you give Beltran two years with an option/buyout for a third?

I don't think we can move on any OF at his level before we move Soriano/Byrd. Beltran's was quietly really good for the Mets. I'd love him on a 2 year deal.

I always liked the guy and would have loved to have him last time around, but between the money you'd eat on Soriano and the money he'll end up getting, I can't imagine it happening.

I am actually very concerned that the Cards end up getting him for a contract similar to ARams. I know it would be a gamble to be relying on Frucal, Holliday, Berkman and Beltran. But if all 3 could stay healthy for just one year.....crap!!!

So The Cardinals could potentially have a roster featuring Beltran, Berkman, Furcal, Carpenter, and Wainwright. I'm assuming the plan on having a lot of big league ready replacements at Memphis.

Adding Beltran wouldn't change much other than adding a star bat. A rotation of Craig/Jay/Beltran in RF and Craig/Berkman at 1b would give them all plenty of AB's and enough depth to give guys a rest. Carpenter and Furcal are obvious injury risks, but Wainwright is coming off of TJ not shoulder issues or chronic elbow problems or something and they have rotation depth in Lynn and Miller. Given the need for a bat and FA remaining, Beltran makes a ton of sense.
