Hudson is owed $5.5 million with a $2 million buyout next offseason.

That's kinda icky, but if you really like Headley, sure.

There are worse gambles than Hudson being a 2 win player for one year, but at his dollars plus the commitment to Headley, you'd start to run into a situation where you can't make the big gains you need to at SP and 1B without more payroll. Getting flexibility in a deal involving Marmol, Soto, Garza, Soriano, Zambrano, or Byrd would do the trick, though.

I'm sort of operating under the assumption that we won't be making any superstar acquisitions. If we do, I'll just consider it a nice surprise bonus.

Then it shouldn't really matter what 1 year contracts we take on then, right?

I'd still like to be efficient with the money we spend.

why? we don't get bonus money to spend in the draft for every dollar under 130 million we stay.

Good point. Mineaswell do it then.

i don't know if you're being serious, but if we're not going to spend any money or be any good in 2012, taking on bad contracts that expire after next season in order to get players who will be good and we will keep beyond 2012 is a really good idea.

Twitters rumors stating the Padre's may want cubs to take on Hudsons contract.... If it means giving up little for Headley I am all for it. Use Hudson as 2B/3B backup or eat some contract and spin him off in a different deal.

Taking on Hudson's contract should reduce the price for Headley. Let's expand the deal to include Clayton Richard. How about Barney + Colvin + Szcur + pitching prospect for Headley + Richard + Hudson?

I think that's really slanted in the Cubs favor. I'd bet it takes almost that much to get Headley without Hudson or Richard involved.

A B2B trade proposal that favors the Cubs? Stop the presses.

They don't really have a reason to move Richard, and even if they did I'm not so sure I'd want him. His FIP and xFIP have been worse the last two years than his numbers dictate and he doesn't seem to do any one thing particularly well. I know he missed time this season, but he's still only been worth 2.5 wins the last two seasons according to Fangraphs... 1.5 if you trust BR's WAR numbers instead. Not to mention his home/road splits are incredibly polarizing. On top of that he's arby eligible for the first time this season so he'll cost a couple million. I'm not a fan.

Hudson still has the chance to be decent. he's going to be 34 in a few days but I'd be Ok trading for him for something minor if theres no long term comitmant. He's owed 5.5 mil in 2012 which is OK, and in 2013 8 mil with a 2 mil buyout. That's the part I don't like. 8 mil sounds like too much to pay for 36 year old Orlando Hudson and 2 mil sounds like to much to make him go away. Last year he was pretty bad. Even his road splits were an unimpressive .260/.737 which beats the hell out of his .235/.634 home line. This being said, I can't see him not being more valuable than Barney.

I wouldn't be opposed to eating Hudson's contract if it meant getting Headley for less. $7.5 million ($5.5 + $2m buyout) is not going to cripple the Cubs in any way shape or form and it shouldn't scare them off it i means we can secure our 3B of the immediate future.

There are far worse contracts on the roster as is, Hudson's is nothing compared to those.

Well yeah, but that doesn't mean we need to add more. I'd be OK with paying him 5.5 mil in 2012 if the Pads would pick up half of the 2 mil 2013 buyout.

I don't disagree with the conclusion, but I don't see anything on that list of arguments that really supports it.

Okay, how about Orlando Hudson was worth 6.7 wins the previous two years until he made the move to the worst hitters park in the majors and his BABIP was 21 points lower than his career average and 19 points lower than his previous year, so if he can make a decent return to his norms by moving away from the worst hitters park in the majors (where he had a triple slash of .235/.303/.330 vs. .260/.359/.379 on the road) then he would be a good bounce back candidate and might well be worth $5.5 million?
