If I put the over/under at 4.5, you guys see more or less trades from us between now and the deadline? I'll take the over personally. Dempster, one of Garza or Maholm, Soto, Reed, and Baker.

Under. Johnson and *maybe* Dempster.

I started to say Maholm, but that option next year looks too sweet and I just can't imagine someone giving us a legit prospect for him.

I think that between now and the waiver deadline we see a lot of movement.

-Dempsters a goner

-if were willing to eat that 90+% of Soriano's contract, the only thing keeping him from being traded is how much we expect back in terms of players

-Johnson, Baker, and Camp are gone. Could be parts of other trades, could each be moved on their own

-If we're willing to pick up a big chunk of salary, Marmol's gone. A lot of team's are looking for back end relievers.

-If we're interested in moving DeJesus, there should be no shortage of interest.

-LaHair could be moved to someone who wants a spare lefty, but at this point he'd only be a throw in

-Tough call on Soto. He's another one who could end up a part of another trade, but as is I can't see us getting much of anything.

As far as the number of actual transactions I'll take the under, but not by much.

Damn. The doom boner came out, didn't it?

Who wants Soto at this point and what's his value? Above average defensively, great pitch framer, but bat looks terrible. still get you a top 30 guy?

I've just had it in my mind Soto winds up in Tampa. Maybe for Niemann, who's still out, I think. Harmless exchange of players that don't have a future where they're at.

The Rays aren't trading Niemann for Soto.

It never goes away. It's just always there, lurking.

Our front office has made it clear they like to hold on to guys unless they are getting extremely favorable deals, and the conditions aren't right for any of our major pieces to get such a deal.

I was under the impression they didn't think all that highly of him? At any rate, Soto is a legit upgrade for them, so I could see him winding up there.

In the case of Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano, teams have shown some interest over the past two weeks, although he has not been approached about a trade. A number of teams, including the Dodgers and Giants, have made inquiries about the outfielder and the parameters of how much of the $44 million remaining on his contract the Cubs would pay, according to major league sources.

The assumption is if the Cubs do trade Soriano they would pay a majority of the remaining contract still owed, depending on the talent they receive in return.

On the player's side, he also has some needs that must be met.

"It will have to be a good city with a good team," he said. "I would give the team the opportunity to trade me, but as I said the team and city would have to be good. Nobody has come to me about a trade yet, so we have two or three days left. We will just wait and see what happens."

That's something we havn't taken into consideration. Just because a team is interested in him doesn't mean that he'll be willing to go there. After the past 2 years with Aramis, Wood, and now Dempster, no longer do I assume that these veteran players will happily go wherever they have a chance to win.

Wow, you're right, no one has ever thought about that. I didn't even know no trade agreements even existed until just now. Boy that changes things!

I came up with 8 players I want traded... hopefully Theo can hit .500

Only eight? I'd trade every one of them if the deal made sense for the team.

Actually 9.

Johnson, Baker, Soto, Dempster, Garza, Maholm, LaHair, Marmol, Camp

I thought about DeJesus but he's my Cubs man crush at the moment.

i reserve my baseball man crushes for slightly-above average players that take walks. mark derosa was the previous man crush.

no soriano? or just thinking it's not too likely?

Dempster is my 1. We have to deal him or it's a set back/ missed opportunity.

Garza can wait to get the best haul.

Marmol, Soto and Soriano should clear waivers and can be dealt later this year. A salary dump would be nice on any of the three.

Baker, Johnson, Camp, and others would net some borderline prospects but probably nothing earthshaking.

Name that baffle me.

Dejesus, why has no one even looked to get him? He has been very solid. He is not expensive. He has time on his deal. The Yankees went and got Ichiro, but Dejesus has been better.

Seems like he would be right up the alley of teams like pittsburgh, washington and baltimore who are all struggling in the OF.

I'm sure teams would be interested in him, but I doubt they'd be interested in trading much for them. And since there's a good shot he could and should be in next year's OF, they have no motivation to move him.

Thr thing is though, Soriano's contract doesn't hurt us at all right now. We can't re-spend it on the draft or IFA's and it's not time for us to spend big on FA yet. Nor is there going to be much to spend it on anyway, on that front. Plus, our payroll is lower than it's been in a while AND heading downward. He's giving us solid production. Not worth what we're paying him, but probably close, to be fair. At this point, I want a solid return for him, or else it's not worth it to trade him. Someone taking the contract does nothing, I'd rather pay it and get something good.

According to Fangraphs he's been worth about $13.5 million thus far. Take that as you will.

Fangraphs also has him as providing the 5th most defensive value in all of baseball (3rd most on a rate basis). He's certainly improved and was always underrated defensively to begin with, but that much?

Soriano does currently have his best OPS+ number as a Cub though.
