Office space at Wrigley Field figures to get even more cramped after the Chicago Cubs' hiring Monday of Shiraz Rehman as the club’s assistant to the general manager.

Rehman, 34, will report to GM Jed Hoyer on potential player acquisitions and assist in providing scouting, financial and statistical information. After spending the last six seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (most recently as director of player personnel), Rehman also will help develop the club's evaluation database and coordinate the department's technological efforts.

Rehman naturally has a Theo Epstein connection: He interned for the Boston Red Sox during the 2005 season in the baseball operations department.

Here's a link to a Q&A with Rehman from a couple years ago.

Does this mean that Bush gets a further demotion? Did they ask him to move his stuff into the basement to clear up some room?

I think assistant to the GM and assistant GM are different things.

I thought so too. I thought the Assistant GM would do more of the working side by side with the GM and the Assistant to the GM was the bitch boy to get Jed his coffee. Hearing what Shiraz is going to be doing though it sounds like Randy Bush is going to become the bitch boy. I'm curious what role he has and if soon he will just end up resigning. Maybe they should just send him to work in Mesa and be "Assistant GM in charge of special projects".

It sounds like Rehman is going to have a narrowly defined role, whereas Bush is more of an advisor. He's also being kept on as a reward for how well he performed his duties during the turnover and could leave whenever he wanted if he desired. He could always use this as a terrific opportunity to work with very smart people who are the polar opposite of the people he used to work for.

There is no demoting. This is just what its like to have a big league front office. I do agree at this time thought that Bush will haver very broad duties. As Theo gets to know him better an appropriate role will be defined. The guy I wonder about most is Kaplan.

my source tells me bush has a very defined role as assistant GM, in charge of destroying all of the hawaiian shirts he owns and use voice dictation software to convert all of those [expletive] handwritten notes and scouting reports to Johnny Sack, or whatever THEO names the computer system that is replacing him.
