b) I have no idea what his intentions were, and neither do you

We sure as [expletive] can figure out what his intentions weren't.

But who cares? Regardless of his intentions, the results were the same.

Uh, I "care" because his disinterest in preventing his football program being used as a staging ground for child rape seems pretty monstrous.

shouldn't intentions matter quite a bit, at least as far as judging him morally? if he (for whatever reason) thought the situation was being handled properly by the administration then it's not as bad. if he was actively trying to do the bare minimum with the goal of covering his ass legally while ending up with the abuse swept under the rug, that's quite a bit different.

The only that makes sense to me is if he was completely oblivious to what was going on. At the very least he knew something "improper" occurred between Sandusky and a young boy on campus, so just that Sandusky was able to return to the campus again and again shows, to me, that his intentions were nowhere near doing the right thing. Unless you're arguing that he basically completely in the dark outside of that one occurrence it rings ridiculously hollow to try and play the "well, we don't know his intentions" card. At the very least his intentions were to continue to allow a known child abuser to use the program and the campus to facilitate interaction with young men and boys. Unless, of course, Sandusky only showed up when Joe wasn't around and everyone was nice enough to not tell him about it.

If you think I'm supporting Paterno here you're not reading very carefully

People here tend not to do that. It's an annoying habit.

I get so [expletive] tired of this reading comprehension [expletive]. It's an internet message board, there's at least as good of odds that the author's post is less clear than they believe it to be as there is some failure of the audience to be able to read.

Derwood - if you give a [expletive] what JoePa's intentions were, then you're not as disgusted as most (everyone?). He damn well intended not to use all his power to stop this. You think he intended to, but what, forgot to bring it up? Forgot he's the most powerful person in the damn town? His intentions were not to put an end to the abuse of children and that's clear from his failure to use his enormous power to do so.

All I'm saying is that whether he was actively hiding what he knew from authorities or was naively assuming someone else would take care of it, the results were still horrifying.

If a bartender keeps serving a drunk guy shots all night and that guy leaves the bar and kills himself in his car, it doesn't matter if the bartender intended for him to die. Whether the bartender was just helping the guy have a good time or was purposely putting the guy in harm's way, the result is the same: dead drunk guy.

All that said, I understand that everyone (including me) is angry and horrified and want answers. There's nothing wrong with questioning Paterno's intentions....I'd like to know myself.

Again, we're talking about a decade here. The "waiting/assuming something would be/had been done" line of thought doesn't fly at all.

I agree. He just got fired and I support the decision. There is zero excuse for a decade of inaction

Justice

Not even close. A fired football coach doesn't fix what happened to those kids. If anything, it distracts from Sandusky.

I agree with the firing, but justice? Give me a [expletive] break

How does it distract from Sandusky? The guy is a kid raper; he's already the ultimate villain and he's going to pay the price for it. It's not like his case is going to fall by the wayside because of this firing.

The guy who was going to get to retire before he was rightly fired. Sandusky has been caught and isn't going anywhere. Paterno was getting all the attention because nothing had happened to him.

College football is a disaster right now. A lot of the big programs in trouble and now this? Who would have JoePa would ever be fired. He deserves it, but this is [expletive] crazy.

Forgive my defensiveness.....the only coach I've ever known on the team I've been a fan of for 25 years just got fired, destroying his legacy along the way. I'm not in the mood for people high-fiving over this

Then sweep it under the rug and roll that rug up and hide it in the closet

man, how in the world has sandusky not committed suicide yet?

He's it on bail so that wouldn't be crazy. Although I don't know how frequently peeresses kill themselves. Is it their thing to stay alive and see all the crap they destroyed?

Isn't he still insisting he's innocent?
