my brother has lived in the Bay area since the late 80s, so I was more aware of Dusty's weaknesses than I probably normally would. I also figure that his weaknesses would not be good with what the Cubs had in place at the time. I put 2 but may have been a little more optimistic. Funny that by July of 03 I was convinced that he was a bad hire and making the playoffs didn't change my mind.

There's a lot of lies being told in this thread. Mostly about how old people were. I'll admit I was about a 7 because I thought that, outside of Bonds, he had virtually nothing else with the Giants but still won games. I also still believed in Hendry at that point. That was back in the Cubs.com days. I don't remember anyone there talking about abusing pitchers.

NSBB could just as easily have been called fireDustyBaker.com

I have no idea if the old Chicago Tribune prospero boards are still around or have archives, but the proof would be there if you wanted it.

Here's a post from alt.sports.baseball.chicago-cubs discussing the acquisition:

Also, can I go on record here and say that Dusty Baker will only end

up being Don Baylor Redux? They are very much like each other --

ex-Managers of the Year who like veterans over youngsters, little ball

over on-base percentage, abusing stating pitchers, and playing mind

games and power struggles with their players.

Yes, it was coming up back then.

What are the lies people are telling about their ages?

I misread people saying they were a 9 with they were 9. Nevermind. My 3 year old was awake all night and I'm not exactly firing on all cylinders.

Wow didn't expect 7 to be the most popular option. Glad I wasn't alone.

In my defense though, I was like 14 or something.
