I'm really thinking that Epstein doesn't end up as GM. He'll be Pres and hire someone else as GM.

I'm going to pretend Ricketts wasn't just paying lip service when he made his comment about not needing baseball people in charge of his baseball people and pray that that isn't the case.

You think compensation would be equal for a lateral move compared to a promotion? Nobody's arguing there should be no compensation involved.

Correct.

The whole reason for compensation is that the Red Sox are losing Epstein's services.

It doesn't really matter to them what role he's taking with the Cubs.

If Cherington left to become assistant GM of the Cubs, you think it would be the same as leaving to become GM?

The Red Sox would not grant permission to the Cubs to interview Cherington for an assistant GM position. This isn't that tricky to grasp. Divorce the permission issue from the compensation issue, and you're home free.

Well, you're wrong as usual if you think a generic team views a guy leaving one job for the same job the same as leaving one job for a promotion.

Oh jesus christ. You can't possibly be this dumb.

THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE ISSUES TO CONSIDER HERE

THE PROMOTION FACTOR ONLY MATTERS FOR THE FIRST OF THEM -- WILL WE OR WON'T WE ALLOW AN INTERVIEW

WE ARE WELL BEYOND THAT STAGE NOW

WE ARE NOW ON TO TACKLING ISSUE #2

FOR PURPOSES OF DETERMINING APPROPRIATE COMPENSATION, IT NO LONGER MATTERS WHETHER ANYONE CONSIDERS THIS A PROMOTION OR NOT

ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT THE RED SOX ARE GIVING UP A VALUABLE ASSET AND THEY NEED TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THAT

Hoyer may stay in sd. But sources say cubs interest real. Cubs also looking at byrnes/mcleod from sd. Story on http://si.com soon

So the Cubs are considering hiring Hoyer, who may stay in SD, but if he goes, Byrnes will be the SD GM, unless the Cubs hire Byrnes, who is also being considered, in which case presumably Hoyer will remain SD GM.

I yield to the all caps answer. It's got to be right - it's eLouder.

So... Anything of actual note happen this morning?

The Raiders gave up a crapload for Carson Palmer.

I'm still stunned at that move. The Raiders have nothing left in next year's draft, and they have some aging pieces. And if Carson plays enough to get a 1st in 2013 (or whatever the conditions are), that's what, 3 first round picks they've given up in recent years for aging guys (Seymour was the 3rd first rounder).

I think Carson can still be a good QB, but he hasn't practiced this offseason, and he's clearly not the same guy as 2-3 years ago. You are also saying bye to Jason Campbell, who was playing well. Granted, he's hurt, but that's got to suck for Jason - playing well and then essentially getting dismissed from the team's future (no way the team gives up that much for Carson and he isn't the favorite to be the starter next year).

I think he's confused.

That or the Cubs had somebody leak this to him to attempt to scare the Red Sox into caving and not losing $6.5M on their lame duck GM.

Would the Padres even grant permission for us to hire their GM to GM?

When you sell your car, does your price depend upon how the person buying it is going to use it?

Heyman weighs in again

Padres gm jed hoyer is being considered for hire by the cubs/epstein. If hoyer goes to chicago, josh byrnes would be sd gm

That's odd. Why would Hoyer make that lateral move? And if he's under contract, the Cubs would have to give compensation there as well.

The Cubs could have the Eastern Front & the Western Front in compensation negotiations.

Ha, looks like Heyman is somewhat covering his ass. Who knows, maybe the Cubs are trying to grab every person that used to be in the Red Sox organization. Next thing you know, we'll hire Ron Jackson to be a minor league hitting coach.

I'm really thinking that Epstein doesn't end up as GM. He'll be Pres and hire someone else as GM.

What would Epstein do in that scenario? He doesn't want to handle the business aspects of the club. He wouldn't be in charge of the baseball part. Why would the Cubs pay all that money for what is basically just an advisor?

Then you're contradicting yourself. You're arguing the Sox' price (compensation) for Epstein depends on how the Cubs are going to use him. Why should it?

I need something that will send me a text message when Laura posts in this thread. It'd save me reading a lot of drivel.

I had that exact same thought this morning.
