John Henry is on 98.5 right now and just said he didn't support the signing of Carl Crawford.

So if Theo is such an idiot, why do we have to give up anything for him?

Because he's under contract with the Red Sox.

Yeah, but aren't the Cubs doing the Sox a favor if they are willing to take the idiot and in effect give the Sox $3.5 million to take him off their hands?

They have every right to receive as much compensation as they can get.

I should rephrase, why should we give them anything of value for Theo if he's the only 'idiot' in that organization to sign Crawford to the deal. Forget that Crawford was a very good player with Tampa Bay before this season. Not saying he was worth that contract but the Red Sox have the financial ability to overspend on players.

A comment like this should hurt some of the Red Sox leverage though.

I agree, but Boston doesn't. So here we are...

Red Sox owner John Henry said in an interview on CBS Radio that he "personally opposed" the signing of Carl Crawford but deferred to those in the team's baseball operations.

"We had plenty of left-handed hitting," Henry said. "I don’t have to go into why. I’ll just tell you that at the time I opposed the deal, but I don’t meddle to the point of making decisions for our baseball team." It's quite a statement that the owner of a team didn't want one of his highest-paid employees and also could be interpreted as a jab at soon-to-be former GM Theo Epstein. Henry might have to have a conversation with Crawford now to smooth things over and hopefully kill any more additional bad PR that's come the team's way lately.

i would want to distance myself from that deal as well, that was a meatball contract. i don't know if theo was trying to be ironically funny with that signing, but it wasn't good.

A deal like that would never happen outside of Boston and New York where they have money to spend like that (yeah I know, Soriano).

Crawford was very good the year before though. It's easy to say what a horrible deal it was now because Crawford played like s*** last year. But he hit .307 the previous season with 90 RBI's, 19 home runs, 47 stolen bases, and a .356 OBP.

They also have the right to live with the consequences to their reputation of breaking protocol by sinking an executive's ability to take a better position with a different organization while doubling his salary.

Sure they do. And the more Henry opens his mouth the less leverage the Sox have. I can't imagine Theo going back and finishing out his last year after the Red Sox ownership and president have thrown people under the bus. Actually, I'd laugh if the Cubs pulled back and said we'll wait until next year to hire Theo. How much would that really set this franchise back?

The Red Sox are demanding P Trey McNutt and one other prospect and the Cubs are balking.

Someone should Photoshop a Red Sox hat on Darwin Barney.

How about Geo Soto too?

Hm... no thanks?

He's 29 years old and he isn't good behind the plate or at the plate. He hit .202 with RISP last year in 114 at-bats.

Theo Epstein sure as heck wouldn't care about the last stat. You're an importer.

Why do you believe he isn't good behind the plate? Is it because that is the only reason you can justify Koye Hill being played? He didn't hit well in any situation last year but he did the year prior. I'm willing to believe that Soto will bounce back in 2012.

What if they win the WS and Theo decides to stay or next year other teams are looking for a GM and pay more money for his services. Get it done now.

This Soto tangent is very, very un-Theo.

I'd give up McNutt and my left Nut. Close it out.

Koyie Hill is better than Geo behind the plate there's no doubt about it but Koyie is so worthless at the plate that it completely overshadows it.

Geovany Soto is going to be 29 years old by the start of next season. If the Red Sox want him and only him for Theo (they aren't going to want him), then you make that deal and call it a day. I'd rather give Castillo a chance behind home plate anyways.

He has the 7th highest WAR among catches between 2008-2011. I am find with that for my starting catcher. Not a great year last year and rather inconsistent but still a solid catcher. Oh and he's improved behind the plate.

Yeah, Soto is fine. We can do a lot worse.
