That's why he hired Sandberg and keeps talking about a major upping of the MLB payroll at the expense of long-term gains like the farm system.

Ricketts has a long-term plan to bring back the fans. I don't think he particularly cares how they react in the meantime.

You don't think he cares how tickets sell in 2012 just because he knows eventually they will sell?

I don't think he's going to flinch on something like this because he's worried about fan reaction to it.

I honestly don't think they care about the 6.5M. This isn't a strap poor org.

So they just throw money away for no reason except principle?

The Red Sox do not intentionally blow resources.

Crawford?

I intentionally didn't leave you that out.

Yes, this. I don't get where Kyle is going with that?

Ricketts has done nothing but what he wanted to do from day one, and not given the slightest indication that he cares about how fans react in the short term.

He didn't fire Hendry immediately. He waited well over a year and then didn't tell anyone that he did it. He didn't hire Sandberg. He's made most of his major investments, both current and planned, in something that most fans won't even notice: scouting and development. He apparently conducted multiple interviews and almost the entire GM search before anything started leaking.

These are the actions of a man who will do whatever he thinks is best for the organization, fan reaction be damned.

Sure he's doing what he think is best for the team, but you're crazy if he doesn't care about the fan's reaction.

The owner has a huge ego and that's what worries me. I don't think 6.5M is a deterrent.

This is going to be just like the actual agreement. Lots of speculation, much of it contradictory, lots of emo drama about "will he or won't he come to the Cubs." On Monday, we had reports of every possible distinction and the consensus was that it might take all week before we knew. On Tuesday night, we found out he'd agreed.

There's going to be lots of drama and emo speculation about whether or not compensation will make it all fall apart, and how this will go well into next week, and then suddenly the deal will be done.

This is a week old but I just saw it over on SoSH:

The Red Sox were never going to give up Youkilus for Beane, as has often been stated and used as a baseline for what the Cubs might give up for Epstein.

Just was coming to post that...

It's been said many times that [the Red Sox in 2002] actually had agreed to trade Kevin Youkilis for Billy Beane, but that's actually not true. I was going back over this the other day. It was really weird, because Billy was actually negotiating with Paul DePodesta, who was going to take over Billy's job in Oakland. So Billy was acting as the Red Sox general manager and DePodesta was acting as the A's general manager, even though neither one of them was already in his position. And, in the end, he explained, Billy said to Paul, 'Look, there are only three players here at that time in the organization -- Kevin Youkilis, Hanley Ramirez and Kelly Shoppach. I can't give you one of the three real assets in the organization. And if you hold out for it long enough, then you're not going to get the general manager's job. So we have to work it out so we all get what we want.' As it worked out, Billy made the decision to stay closer to his family. He believes it was a life-changing decision not to come to Boston."

I wonder if that's the reason the owners are doing this?

Trust me he cares. He needs to make money for the short term and long term.

I do not trust you.

I can't blame you there.

You can understand why Theo wants out after listening to that John Henry interview. What an inept organization full of douchebags.

Then what are we?

Hey smartie! We're bashing other teams right now. Focus.

The Cubs look like the Patriots compared to the Red Sox. The Cubs really aren't that inept anymore. I think Tom is doing a great job at running the franchise especially after Hendry was fired. The Cubs were more stupid than douchebags.

Appearantley Henry is on the radio right now. I'm reading tidbits from pissed off people in Boston.

John Henry is on 98.5 right now and just said he didn't support the signing of Carl Crawford.

Also listening. John Henry and his pathetic co-owners are just trying to create smokescreens so the fans perceptions' will be that the problems are gone and they will go to Fenway and pay absurd prices to see a 3rd place time. That's why the put out the hit job on Tito. In fact, the problems are in the clubhouse in the form of entitled players signed long term who don't care about winning.

True. But don't give Tom too much credit yet. We have to see results first.

So if Theo is such an idiot, why do we have to give up anything for him?

Because he's under contract with the Red Sox.

Popped up on Roto also

Red Sox owner John Henry said in an interview on CBS Radio that he "personally opposed" the signing of Carl Crawford but deferred to those in the team's baseball operations.

"We had plenty of left-handed hitting," Henry said. "I don’t have to go into why. I’ll just tell you that at the time I opposed the deal, but I don’t meddle to the point of making decisions for our baseball team." It's quite a statement that the owner of a team didn't want one of his highest-paid employees and also could be interpreted as a jab at soon-to-be former GM Theo Epstein. Henry might have to have a conversation with Crawford now to smooth things over and hopefully kill any more additional bad PR that's come the team's way lately.

Yeah, but aren't the Cubs doing the Sox a favor if they are willing to take the idiot and in effect give the Sox $3.5 million to take him off their hands?

I should rephrase, why should we give them anything of value for Theo if he's the only 'idiot' in that organization to sign Crawford to the deal. Forget that Crawford was a very good player with Tampa Bay before this season. Not saying he was worth that contract but the Red Sox have the financial ability to overspend on players.

A comment like this should hurt some of the Red Sox leverage though.
