Exact terms have not been released, but it appears to be a 1 year deal.

I'm a little surprised the cards were able to negotiate another 1 year contract considering his level of production this season. Presuming the price tag is not astronomical, this is a great deal for them.

My surprise stems from his comments 2 days ago Re: his ongoing negotiations with STL:

It’s always about money. No matter what people say, it’s always about the money.

Signing another 1 year deal without even testing free agency appears to contradict those sentiments. I guess we'll see how much he gets next year. It just seems like he is bailing on what may be his last shot at a multi-year contract.

I bet it's for too much money, and that he'll be their opening day first baseman.

That's a pretty good bet. I have a feeling Berkman is the transition guy for Matt Adams, which is going to be a monumentally stupid move.

Happy with this deal, but it probably means that they're not too optimistic about Pujols, so that may be good news for you folks here who are still gunning to sign him.

I take it as St. Louis saying hey Albert, we're ready to move on without you so take our embarrassing offer or gtfo.

He'll gtfo.

Probably more of a backup plan than leverage.

Yeah, somehow they had room for both of them on the team this year.

Albert's going to make just a wee bit more next year, plus they have a good bit in raises due to other players without a bunch of money falling off the payroll. It's hard to see Pujols staying unless they get REALLY creative with the early years of the contract, they raise the payroll, they get a bunch of playoff revenue they can give straight to him, or some combination of those. I don't think it's very likely.

Well, considering Berkman's getting a $4 million raise and Pujols is looking at anywhere between a $6-14 million raise, that really doesn't have much to do with them affording them next year.
