Ortiz threw a headbutt and Mayweather bitch slapped him. Greatest ending to a fight I've seen in a long time.

Larry Merchant's post-match interview (NSFW language) was hilarious.

he always does that to larry merchant, always. it's a routine they have, isn't it? i don't know that much about boxing, but mayweather is always talking [expletive] to merchant whenevr i see their post-fight interview. they're good friends, i'm sure.

Ortiz was finally getting inside and getting a little traction -- I don't know what would possess him to head-butt PBF like that, except perhaps he was being mocked again. May was shaking his head at him a few seconds earlier. But that doesn't matter -- the head-butt was a foul and Cortez was right to take away the point.

After that, I'm tired of reading that this is Ortiz' fault for not "defending himself at all times." You've seen it happen a million times. A guy fires off a low blow or a rabbit punch, gets warned, the two fighters touch gloves or embrace briefly, step back and then continue the fight. That's what would have happened last night if May had let it. He waited a split second and took the cheap shots.

And further, if he'd just taken the first punch, I think they'd have been even. And the fight would've gone on. It was incredibly cheap to deck the guy. I don't care about the technical reading of the rules. He knows better, and he did it because he doesn't give a [expletive] about the game. He just cared about getting out of there with his $40 million and his undefeated record, and he didn't care how it happened.

[expletive].

And now it looks like he did it just to get a controversial result that would lead to a "REVENGE!"-themed and promoted rematch. Which, conveniently, keeps him out of the ring with Pac for another year.

It's times like this that make me question why I'm one of the few remaining fans of boxing.

Ortiz butted him because May was backed up over the ropes and he couldn't reach him. Ortiz is a FIERY LATIN young guy that got too excited in the moment. Mayweather is the best villain in sports right now. He's Lebron James except he can't be beaten.

Only because he refuses to fight the guy who can.

Is there video of the punch?

Wow that was an incredible punch. Much harder than I was expecting.

Pisses me off again seeing it.

Any way you slice it, May knew exactly what he was doing and it was [expletive].

He gets to do that once. No one will let that happen to them the second time. Well.....unless they are incredibly stupid.

May is casting himself like a pro wrestling heel. He's the fighter you can't help but hate.

Ortiz is a tomato can compared to Mayweather, but Floyd is right: you have to protect yourself at all times.

Floyd has had a bone to pick with HBO for over a decade (rightly), because his first contract locked him into more fights at a lower gross than other fighters under their banner like Roy Jones, David Reid, and Tito Trinidad, despite Floyd having to face far superior opposition.

For years he was making about the same as Fernando Vargas, which is an insult considering Mayweather's talent.

Come on, you don't have anything bad at all to say about Floyd in that situation?

Of course you have to protect yourself at all times, but that was a pretty [expletive] thing to do.

It was a crappy thing to do on Mayweather's part but I don't agree with the characterization that what Ortiz did happens all the time in boxing without someone taking advantage. I'm too lazy to find the video but he has his chin resting on PBF's shoulder and then turns to look at the ref and just stands there like a moron. It wasn't the same thing as tapping gloves to restart action.

Ortiz kissed him. He was clowning around and the environment got to him. Floyd took advantage like any pro would.

So Mayweather is angry at HBO because he agreed to a below-market contract? He has nobody to blame but himself.

It should be ancient history; he signed the contract as a teenager with Arum as his agent. The networks quit signing fighters to exclusive contracts back in '02, but Floyd is still pissed, hence his argument with Merchant.

The only reason he still fights on HBO is because he's still under contract with Golden Boy. Don't be surprised if the Paquiao fight is a Showtime production.

The second punch was so shocking. The first one I assumed it was just a bitch slap for the headbutt, but then he hit him with the haymaker. It's was a hell of a moment.

It wasn't very sporting of Mayweather, but it was in the rules. I like Ortiz a lot, but you can't be wandering around the ring with your hands down. Just asking to get blitzed.

I'm in the same boat, and Ortiz brought it on himself with the butt, anyway. He knew who he was fighting. You're really going to headbutt Floyd and then walk around with your gloves down? He's literally the last boxer on earth you should try that against.

like he said, lesson learned. I've watched that video 100 times and it never gets old.

But didn't Floyd say something to the effect that he's always loyal to HBO? My feeling was that this is just a schtick he & Merchant have. I'm probably wrong, I know little about this whole deal.
