Baez had a fielding error on his first attempt, I hear. I didn't actually follow so I'm not sure if it's actually true.

christ, aramis is already rubbing off on him

Cashner with a scoreless inning for Tennessee. Seems like he's getting closer to making it back. Still, I'll be holding my breath the first few months he is back.

Hayden Simpson: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K. Greathouse struck out 7 and only walked 2 in 4.2. Zych gave up 1 in but was able to rack up a strikeout, I wonder if he'll get bumped up to Boise soon.

Mesa's starting lineup is fun to look at. A ton of prospects in there, and that's with Marco Hernandez not playing today.

del Valle got murdered. Well, Daytona got murdered. Same with Peoria. Kirk's really struggled the 2nd half. The GO/AO ratio has spiked, though, so may be a measure of bad luck. Nevertheless, a season with as bright a spot as he's had isn't exactly ending on a strong note.

The del Valle call-up seemed a bit early as well. Tis one start, though. Would like to see a guy like that refine his secondary stuff at a level before getting a bump. For example, the Beeler bump up earlier in the year was bothersome in the same way.

Nice day so far for the Iowa trio of interest.

Jackson 3 for 5, HR, K

Lemahieu 2 for 3, BB

Flaherty 2 for 4, HR

Lemahieu and probably Flaherty have another AB coming.

Great game from Jay Jackson too. 7 IP 1 ER 6 H 1/5 BB/K. I'd really like to see him get a few big league starts in September. However, thanks to John Gaub and Kyle Smit, things got real ugly, real fast for the I Cubs in the 8th.

Boise had a terrible game last night.

Offensively; DeVoss had a double, but struck out twice and hit into a double play (though the call was questionable even by Salem fans). Cuneo was 1-4 and he too hit into a double play. The only real bright spot was Mario Mercedes who seems to have an uncanny abilty to square up on a pitch. I couldn't help but think of Castro.

Defensively; Both DeVoss and Cuneo had an error, although I think both look good defensively. Mercedes has a very strong and accurate arm.

Pitching; ugh, walks, wild pitches, and bad defense led to a long night.

In short, I hope to see a better game tonight.

Blast from the past; I believe this is the same Mario Mercedes that was on the Hawks years ago. A the time he was a skinny little kid who I worried would get himself seriously hurt in a collision at the plate. His framed has filled out and he has lost a step (although still fairly fleet of foot for a catcher), but he has one of the better arms I have seen at this level. He is also a very good contact hitter. I still think he has a decent shot a being a good back-up catcher at the ML level. But at my age I tend to have sympathy for the veterans. Also does anyone remember Henry Cotto? Apparently he is a roving instructor for the Giants these days.

Someone asked me about DeVoss's speed the other day. I would say fast rather that blazing fast. The Salem fans claim that their young center fielder, Galindo, was the fastest man in the league. Judging by how much ground he could cover in center, they could be right.

Someone mentioned that I should keep an eye on Chen. While he did not have a hit, he looked good at the plate. My first impression though is of someone who is rather small. It is hard to imagine him generating much power. He was playing in left. I did not get the impression that he had the speed to patrol center. A corner outfielder without much power? We will see.

Golden looked bad at the plate. He was having a tough time laying off of, and catching up to, high heat.

Edit: I checked and Chen is listed at 6'1" and 170. Not too short.

Chen plays a lot of CF and is a work in progress there. He should eventually have the speed/athleticism to get by there but he's converting from middle infield. With Zapata and DeVoss there, he's shifted to LF a bit too but his calling card will have to be CF.
