Wright cleared waivers according to MLB trade rumors. Kind of surprising no one claimed him. $15 million next year and a $16 million club option for 2013 that voids if he gets traded. Not that the Mets would have let him go, but that he went unclaimed is kind of surprising.

Why wouldn't the Brewers try to get him to be next year's Prince replacement and to take at bats away from good human/bad baseball player Casey McGehee?

Or some of the other teams with terrible 3B situations? Detroit, etc...

Presumably, clubs with interest in Wright were aware of NY's asking price prior to the trade deadline and as such were disinclined to engage in negotiation.

I really doubt the Brewers have the money to add Wright's contract.

Or the prospects/players to obtain him that they'd be willing to move

True, but what hurt can it do to claim him and spend a few minutes on the phone? Who knows, with the Mets terrible financial situation, maybe the cost would be a lot less than you would think.

Perhaps interested teams spent those few minutes on the phone BEFORE deciding whether to put in a claim, and found out it would be a waste of time.

Entirely possible.

True but you make the claim and no one else can get him, and you get a .00005% chance that the Mets randomly give him to you because the Madoff crap is worse than previously believed.

The only downsides that might be true are: There is a nominal fee to make a claim, correct? Also I asked this yesterday but didn't get a response. It might be true that you lose your waiver priority if you claim someone? So if you are the Astros, and that is true, I don't make that claim for several reasons. But a team like the Yankees can claim anyone they want.

You guys would love Jim Bowden. He used to claim like 150 guys per season.

Wasn't Steve Phillips the same? I recall stories that he pissed off a lot of teams by putting in claims for anyone & everyone

The downside is your relationship with other GM's It's courtesy to not claim players that you don't have serious interest in (or in some cases that you are blocking from other teams). Losing that courtesy with another GM hurts both sides with very little upside.

That may be the case. Problem is both have written articles about how the process works/who might get claimed in the past few years, so it's hard to track down a story about them claiming everybody. Best I could find was an article from '99 saying

Should some player of consequence be placed on waivers before the end of the season, Bowden can be expected to put in a claim in order to block a deal that might disrupt baseball's delicate balance of power.

I'm pretty sure Bowden was also the guy who'd call up GMs at 3 AM with [expletive] insane trade proposals.

This. Weigh that .00005% against the vastly more likely outcome of pissing off a colleague you'll need/want to work with in the future.

When's the last time a young star like Wright got traded at the August deadline? It doesn't happen. I find this more interesting because it could mean that the Mets will be listening this offseason. Wright would give this franchise the white, intelligent, hardworking 3B it deserves!

No but really, he'd do really well here.

I think 2009 he was blaming his poor performance on the new ballpark's dimensions

Then in 2010 he bounced back nicely

This year I think he's been hampered by injuries (obviously, only 70 games played)

Posted

He's "fine" is the sense that he's still a good player, but he's not even close to what he used to be. His walk rate has dropped and his K rate has gone through the roof.

Wright's first 5 seasons: .309/.389/.533

Wright's last 3 seasons .287.366/.468

Almost a 100 point dropoff in total OPS, and it happens right after he turns 26?

So I ask again... what the hell happened to David Wright?

His 2010 was only a little better than his 2009. He just hit more runs. He also walked less and struck out more.

Either way, neither of those 2 seasons were close to the season he had in all 4 previous years.

Next year they would if they lose Fielder, which they probably will.

Fielder's entire salary is spoken for next year with raises to existing players.

The Brewers are probably not going to do nothing to replace Fielder, if he leaves. They're young and have good pitching, so they're primed to make a run here.

Not saying they'll land Wright, but they'll be aggressive finding some sort of replacement.

They'll have to raise payroll then, because they don't have any payroll of significance available. Possible, especially since they'll have playoff revenue in some quantity, but far from a guarantee. And even then, you're talking about replacing someone of Fielder's quality just to get back to square one.

I think that Gamel's the heir apparent for Fielder. They should contend next year without him on pitching if nothing else, but after that, they'll have to decide between Greinke, Marcum, and Wolf to join Gallardo in the rotation. After that, I don't like they're chances unless they get lucky with some prospects. I know they have one pitching prospect whose supposed to be pretty good.

How do we explain the fact that they've been trying to extend Fielder (or at least have publicly stated as much)?

The notion that Fielder's money is already spent surely doesn't jive with that part.
