Excellent article. Must read for Cubs fans that follow the minors and player development.

My favorite quotes....

...we went after the hitters, and we went after what we termed in the higher picks to be a little bit more intelligent at the plate, guys that have a chance to have a pretty good OBP. They're selective, they want to work the pitcher hard. Sometimes that doesn't always result in walks, but what it does is it results in high counts, which gets the pitcher out of the quicker.

You look at Zeke DeVoss in his first 90-100 plate appearances, he's got a .462 on-base percentage.

That said, we went after the hitters, and we went after what we termed in the higher picks to be a little bit more intelligent at the plate, guys that have a chance to have a pretty good OBP. Between domestic and international signings, the Cubs figure to reach about $20 million.

Interesting quote. That means $8 million on the international market.

Last year, the Cubs spent a shade less than $6 million including the 3 Cuban defectors.

So far, we only know the Cubs spent $1.1 M on Luis Enrique Acosta. I am assuming the Cubs spent about $2 million more on Mark Malave ($1.5 M) and Ricardo Marcano ($500k). No idea how much the Cuban defectors cost but I'm guessing Frank Del Valle at least got a significant bonus. I take that means there's over $4 M and closer to $5 M in international money to be spent or signings unaccounted for.

"You've got a lot of cross-scouting in there where I think people might not have done their homework as well and just took for granted that this guy was totally unsignable in their minds. Some did their homework well. He probably did not fit into their criteria. I think clubs kind of figured that this was a North Carolinian that was going to the University of North Carolina. I think some people kind of took for granted his allegiance to that school and the state of North Carolina. I think all this little things going into it probably let him get all the way to the 14th."

you can tell wilkin didn't go to school for non-redundancy. yowzas

Well, last year they spent $1.4M on their top three non-Cuban IFAs and spent about $6M overall on IFAs, including Cubans. So even if they are done signing big-ticket Dominicans and Venezuelans, the Cubs would be around $7.5M without any of their other IFA spending being different from last year's.

Or maybe it was because other teams didn't want to pay what the Cubs were willing to pay.
