According to Bruce Levine, Kerry Wood rejected a trade to Philadelphia. Interesting--if true--that Hendry actually presented a deal to Wood to reject. I wonder if there's a team he would approve going to?

Good.

I don't know. If Philly is cleaning out their farm system to win it all this year, I wonder what kind of prospect we could get for Wood. Then just sign him again for next year.

Exactly. Why are people happy about this?

Agreed. Wood is a great reliever at the price, but I cant understand why he wouldn't want to go somewhere for a chance to win. Christ, its 2 months, probably closer to 3 for the Phillies, so he doesn't exactly have to uproot his family.

Maybe because he enjoys where he is and doesn't see any great validation from being a spare part on a team that might win a championship. He has teammates he likes, lives in a city he is familiar with and enjoys, gets to spend a lot of time with his wife and kids and plays in front of fans that generally appreciate him. Do you think pitching middle relief for 3 months on a loaded team with a bunch of superstars would change his life because he might be able to flash around a championship ring he really didn't fully earn? Obviously he has enough money because he passed on a lot to come here, so at this point in his career he is where he wants to be.

yeah, i could see why someone would jump at the opportunity, but i could see why someone would also pass. the guy has played for 3 organizations in 2 years, maybe he just doesn't like moving around.

I honestly hope we didn't piss him off by suggesting a trade after the discount he gave us.

This guy seems to genuinely love our hapless organization. Can we not [expletive] with him, please?

I'm guessing they were offering him a chance to go to the best team in the league as a courtesy more than anything.

If Wood was offended by this request, then he's insane. For all Hendry's faults, I have no doubt in his ability to skillfully inquire as to Kerry's interest in playing for a title this year. There's no way such a request would piss him off.

Not only should it not piss him off to be offered a chance to play for a title, but what do the Cubs have to lose if they did piss him off? Access to a fairly decent reliever?

A bro 4 life

GR's right, I'm sure Hendry handled this with tact. I'm just really, really impressed that he gave us such a discount and really like the idea of him in the organization well after his playing days are over. To trade him mid-season simply because his contract was so team-friendly would be pretty cold.

i don't see the problem. they gave him the option to have a shot at a championship with a really good team. a lot of players would take that opportunity, but he passed. if anything i'd say that's nicer than giving him no other choice but to play out the string with a terrible team.

It would be cold to send him to Iowa. They would have traded him because somebody wanted him to help them win a pennant.
