How bad is that? How much time should that cost him?

The only comparison I have is a dislocated thumb I had maybe ~15 years ago. I was in a splint for two weeks and it was sore for one or two weeks after that. I was in my early 20's at the time.

Assuming he's ok, does he go to the AFL this year?

My hunch is, provided he's healthy, that he'll be in the mix. The only issue would be if they felt he was too worn out from the season, but he'll have missed two big stretches of time this year (the previous injury, which was sandwiched around graduation). Furthermore, the Cubs are probably planning on having him in AA sooner than later in 2012, so getting him some competition against tougher pitching would be nice.

I could definitely see them letting him rest this offseason. His last baseball offseason consisted of playing college football so I'm sure he could use a real break.

i think juan pierre once suffered a similar injury.

Not a good reference on whether the injury affected his power.

He hasnt hit more than 3 home runs in a season since.

I know we've been making fun of the Pierre comparison, but I'd gladly take a Pierre type career from Szczur. He had some pretty good peak years in the early 2000's.

If Tony Campana or Evan Crawford were to become Juan Pierre, Id be thrilled. If Matt Szczur were to become Juan Pierre, Id be dissapointed.

I don't know. I just don't see Szczur's ceiling being that much higher than 01' to 04' Pierre. He should produce a little more power, but Pierre's 4 year peak was around .320/.370/.370. Would we really be dissapointed if Szczur put those numbers up over a 4 year stretch? Along with 60 or so stolen bases.
