I still think Barney ends up with a 8-10 year MLB career between 4-6 teams as a utility player.

Which if true might make him better than some of those "better options waiting in the minors". This is especially true when you consider the Cubs' record on developing position players.

It might, but it might also make him worse than some of those "better options waiting in the minors." The point is, Barney isn't a good enough player at this point to not give those other options a shot when they're deemed ready.

Barney's defense does make him more valuable than just looking at his offense would indicate (he's been a 1.0 WAR player so far) but even taking his defense into account doesn't make him so valuable that we shouldn't be willing to try minor leaguers with more offensive potential.

Right now, I imagine Ryan Flaherty could top Darwin Barney and his post-April .600 OPS.

I'm hoping he's our opening day 2B next year.

We'll have to wait and see whether Flaherty and/or the other prospects take over 2B next year. As I stated before, he won the job this year and has managed to keep Baker and DeWitt on the bench as utility players.

He hasn't "won" anything. Baker is a platoon player who certainly should be getting the starts against LH pitchers. The only argument to trot him out there over DeWitt is that Barney at least is better defensively since both have been brutal offensively. Barney has in no way shown that he should be considered anything near a lock at 2B.

Given his play from May 1st on, I don't think he's "deserved" to keep Baker or DeWitt on the bench. He's living off his April.

^^Wonder how long it's gonna take Quade to realize Barney belongs at the bottom of the order

I'm hoping he has at least started to realize that now. Barney has been in the 8th spot 3 games in a row (2 against a left-hander and one against a right-hander). In fact, last night's lineup was probably the best one of the year.

Welp that's my bad. I'm so apathetic I haven't been paying much attention since the holiday weekend.
