Simpson: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Most of his Runs were unearned, and his only earned was after a bad call at 2nd that would have ended the inning.

But he did let up a lot of hits, was better then most of his outtings latly

Dallas Beeler is really struggling at AA. The Cubs probably shouldn't have moved him up so aggressively.

Hayden Simpson story from the CSN Chicago web site.

“It wasn’t a fun experience,” said Simpson, who is slated to start Sunday for the Chiefs against Kane County. “It knocked me down pretty hard. All the doctors that I saw said that it was the worst case of mono they had ever seen in their lives, at least in their careers as doctors. I had flu-like symptoms during the season but they gave me antibiotics and I played through it.

“After the draft I got the same thing and it was 20 times worse. I might have had a mild case of mono during the season and this was a relapse. It was no joke at all. I had to wait to get cleared because my spleen was swollen and large and they didn’t want it to rupture. I started to feel better around the end of September and through October it got steadily better but I couldn’t get cleared until around Thanksgiving to get throwing and begin real workouts.”

Simpson lost about 22 pounds while he was sick and says he probably still needs to gain another eight or nine pounds back in order to return to his normal playing weight. His arm strength also suffered as a result and his velocity this season has been inconsistent.

And a story on the Boise outfield trio of Pin-Chieh Chen, Reggie Golden and Kyung-Min Na.

Wilson has quickly become impressed with Chen’s ability since he made the move from second base to outfield.

“He loves it out there,” Wilson said of the 6-1, 170-pounder from Taiwan. “They made the move in extended (spring training), and he just ran with it. You can see the ability was there, the arm strength, the speed, and the last couple of nights he’s made a couple of great catches.”

...

Golden has some speed, too, but he brings another weapon to his position: his arm.

“His arm has gotten 10 times stronger from spring training to now,” Wilson said.

Liria's final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. He's up to 10/2 K/BB in 9.1 innings this season.

Ackerman had a really strong outing going but tired in the 5th (2 BBs and a WP before he was pulled and reliever Ramon Garcia allowed an inherited run to score). Still, he put together the best outing of his brief pro career tonight.

Ackerman with a good outing. He had a bad first inning in his earlier start, and Garcia let in one of his runners in the fifth, so his ERA looks bad. But 11 K's in 7.2 is pretty good, and maybe 5 hits? Lots of walks thus far, though.

Nice to see him having some success. Maybe what the scouts saw in him will be vindicated, and at 20 from a small college background, it might be that he was far from a finished prospect when drafted. Anyway, at least for the night I'll hope for him.

Marwin Gonzalez was promoted to Iowa.

Isnt he pretty much the same guy as Jonathon Mota? Why do they refuse to promote Flaherty?

I don't see where they are refusing to promote Flaherty but, rather, seems to me that they want him to continue to play around the field. That's something that he wouldn't do if he was brought up to AAA to replace an injured 3B. This year he's only played 3rd 7 times (1B 4, 2B 30, SS 12, LF 21, RF 12, DH 1).

Keep in mind that 22 pounds off a 170-175 pound frame is 153-158 pounds (or roughly 13% of his playing weight). Vogelbach lost 14% intentionally and his numbers skyrocketed between his JR and SR years. The difference is that Simpson needed to gain weight and yet he lost it. That's like Voglebach adding 40 pounds to his 280 pound JR body. While Simpson isn't playing at that weight it does take about a year to recover from a mono relapse (my son had a very similar thing happen several years back).

Lets see what a season of pitching and an off-season of "Camp Colvin" and Instructs will do. I'm not really concerned...

also when you get mono once you are more susceptible to getting it again and again. And, it can permanently change your sleeping habits and energy level. Especially when you have it as bad as Simpson did. Its amazing nearly a year later he is struggling to get back to playing weight.

Given the high flameout rate of pitching prospects in general, and high schoolers, I go into it concerned and wait for them to do something to lessen the concern.

I agree with the general sentiment, but Simpson was a college draftee.

As I wrote that I was thinking to myself, "did he come out of college"? But for some reason didn't bother to look it up. That was dumb.
