Justin Bour will be in the HR Derby, which starts at 4:45 PM Central.

Also, things are going to be kind of hectic for me this weekend, so I'm getting the next few threads up now in case I don't have much time later.

szczur has his 5th hr.

austin kirk got knocked around in the third inning, allowing 6 runs. his line: 5 ip, 8 h, 6 er, 0 bb, 3 k. he allowed 7 singles and a double so at least they weren't teeing off long balls on him.

Wes Darvill is starting at shortstop for Boise today despite Brad Zapenas, a defensive-oriented SS, being in the lineup (Zapenas is playing at 2B).

Tennessee won 5-3 Box Score

Ya sure about that :-k

And when was JY Serrano promoted to Tennessee?

Today, with Ty'Relle Harris going on the DL after getting hurt in that hit-and-run accident.

Wes Darvill just missed a home run and has to settle for a 2-run double. The Hawks have scored 5 thus far in the 5th and have hit around. Reggie Golden with 2 singles in the inning.

ETA: Now 8 runs in the 5th.

Wellington Castillo is hotter than anything. I'm sure there have been hot prospects before, but other than that week Vitters had in Peoria, I'm not sure I can remember many or any as blazing as Castillo has been. He's up in the .330's now average-wise at Iowa, and has 9 HR's in 30-some games at Iowa.

He'll still be 24 when next season starts, so he's not a fossil. Given his physical tools for defense and throwing, I think he's got some value if he can hit.

nice to see him pitch well, because he sucked last year, and a lot of our far east pitching signees have been flops.

Just curious, but am I the only one relatively surprised that Szczur has 5 homers already this year? I didn't think he'd get that many all season, even hearing how he had power potential down the line.

I'm actually starting to think he has more upside than Brett possibly.(not a knock on Brett either, since I can see a .350 OBP type who is near 20-20 every year with him) Can Szczur become a slightly better average hitter, with less walks(but a decent amount) less K's, close to the same power with more speed than Brett? Part of me is starting to think this may be the case and we could very well have a VERY exciting OF in mid 2013 or so.......

iowa's pitching is comically bad. their team ERA will be just a shade under 7.00 after this game.

That's all in the last 6 weeks or so too. Since May 1 he's been a ~.335/.370/.490/.860 hitter with 5 HR, 11/13 BB/K, and 13/17 SB in about 160 PA's.

he probably does have more upside than jackson. i don't think jackson's strength was really his upside but rather than he's a become a pretty good bet to become an above-average CF. but he's not as fast as szczur and he certainly is going to strike out more frequently, which will hold down his batting average.

I don't think there's any question Szczur has a higher ceiling than Jackson now but that's partly because Brett Jackson doesn't have the potential to do anything great. Ceiling-wise, Szczur has the advantage in terms of pure hitting and contact ability, base stealing, CF defense and speed/athleticism. Jackson has the advantage in terms of patience (but Szczur has displayed a good plan at the plate) and power but given how far Szczur has already come this season and how much power he has displayed in BP, it isn't hard to imagine him having a higher ceiling in terms of power.
