Apparently Tayler Scott said he signed with the Cubs on his Facebook but I have no idea how to stalk these people on Facebook so I can't confirm.

Thanks, TT.

@KendallRogersPG: Hearing the #Cubs and 4th-round pick, hard-throwing reliever Tony Zych, are close to a deal. Not a big surprise.

third round money??? jeez. i between this and the high school kid from illinois i feel like we're now overpaying for amateur talent as well as major league talent.

Shoulders is considered top 10 round talent ($100,000-$150,000 bonus) and there's generally a premium to sign overslot guys who fall as low as he did, so all things considered, I don't really think it's that big a deal if he signed for about $350,000.

that's quite a premium. mcnutt only got like $125k. i would have expected somewhere around $150k for shoulders, but $350k seems like too much. same with schlecht; i don't think anyone had him rated as a 4th round prospect so 4th round money seems excessive.

but don't get me wrong, i'm happy to see the cubs spending on the draft and i'd much rather have them overspending by $200k on a couple of draftees or international free agents than on guys like grabow or henry blanco.

@jimcallisBA: None. Believe those are both done & under wraps. @jdfisch: Does Rock shoulders signing affect vogelbach Gretzky signing?

@jimcallisBA: Believe it's done, just not officially announced. @Dylanj85: what happened with Trevor Gretzky ? Did that deal fall through?

Yeah I'm as excited as the next guy to see the Cubs spending on amateurs, but somehow giving 3rd round money to a 10th round talent that's been taken twice in the 20's just doesn't seem like smart business.

While true, at the end of the day it's like 200k that probably wouldn't be better spent elsewhere. As it's been said, overspending under a million dollars on something that might payoff big is nothing compared to overspending by millions and millions on major league talent.

I don't understand why you guys keep bringing up where he was drafted as if it's relevant.

it's not. but where people thought he should have been drafted is relevant, and i haven't really seen anybody who thought of him as a third round money guy.

anyway most they wasted was like $350k, so not worth losing sleep over.

is it not weird to anyone that there has been little to no talk of baez behind all of the other overslot news?

edit: nm. the last post of the last page got buried for me.

Dan Vogelbach will be in Chicago for a physical tomorrow. Jim Callis would say that means nothing because teams give physicals for their tough signs so they don't need to worry about that as they hammer out a contract at the 11th hour but I will still read into it.

Blast me for this if you will, but if we were to sign all of these overslots, and miss out on Baez, would it be the worst thing in the world? don't get me wrong, he seems very intriguing, but doesn't excite me as much as most of the other top ten picks in the draft, and if we were to miss out on him, we'd end up with 2 top ten picks next year, which would be sweet as long as we didn't use them on any Cubans in their late 20's.

next year's draft is not suppose to be as good as this year's. and baez doesn't excite you as much as most other guys picked in the top 10 because he's not as good as most of them and accordingly was picked later than most of them.

Yes, you're not likely to get even equivalent talent at 9A next year. And most teams with multiple first round picks go cheap on at least one of them to stay in line with budget (this years Diamondbacks are the rare exception).

Not that that matters, college isn't really an option for him. Even if Bruce Miles hadn't said so, I'd guess there's a 100% chance he'd sign.

man i'd still have to believe baez is the best overall talent drafted, as intriguing as the others are

Without a doubt, and I really like Maples.

Baez is signing, so it's not even an issue. But if it did somehow happen, yes, it would be a big blow to not sign Baez. He has one of the biggest upside bats in the whole draft and his ceiling is arguably higher than anybody currently in our organization. That's the kind of guy you NEED to bring in.

Tell me more about Maples. Is he a 1st round talent, 2nd round talent? I know little about him, but all the hype makes me really hope we get the guy. Is he worth Szczur money? Samrdzjia money?

Just search the thread for his name. You can find the scouting reports that were posted about him when he was picked, as well as the answer from last time you asked this question.

From the BA prospects chat:

If Cubs are able to sign the likes of Maples, Dunston Jr, and Jacquez, as well as Vogelbach, Baez, and Gretzky, are all those guys immediately Top 20 prospects for them?

I'd say yes on Baez, Vogel-bomb and Maples and probably on Jacquez, who I really like though he's small. Not so much on the legacy kids.
