Franchise players ranking

ESPN is doing a franchise players draft. Basically in the majors or minors if you could pick anybody to build your franchise around who would you pick. Starlin Castro went 19th right in between Buster Posey and Hanley Ramirez.

So far through 24 out of the 30 picks Florida already has 3 drafted players, Tampa has 2, San Francisco has two, Colorado has two, and Washington has two. 13 other teams have 1 player each.

Ah, you're absolutely right.

Why would Castro go before Hanley? Age playing that much of a factor?

That, and some heavy drinking before drafting.

There were some concerns about Ramirez struggling a bit at the plate this year. Also, I think there is an idea that Ramirez will eventually move to a "non-premium" position because of his sub par defense at short.

Castro is seen as someone who has a good shot at winning a batting crown, develop decent power and turn into an above average defensive player. He also has quite a bit more career left than Ramirez.

I know he's struggled a bit this year, well a lot. That's good I guess. Here's to hoping we can add another top guy in this draft.

i thought the post about wilson ramos being drafted was a joke. let the record show that 28 year old miguel cabrera, he of the 147 career ops+ and 180 ops+ the last year and 2 months, went undrafted while wilson ramos and his career .285/.332/.431/.763 minor league line, was picked. i think doug glanville needs to cut down on the world of warcraft and pay more attention to baseball.

all snark aside - that's a good idea, tim

If nobody else gets things started, I'll take a crack after I get back home this weekend.

That would be fun, I'm not sure how you could do it though. I don't it would be as fun if you assigned one person to each spot like a fantasy draft.

It would take a while a long time to do it this way, but the best way to involve the community would be to take nominations for a top 30 list. Cap it at say 60 names. Then start a poll where people pick their top 10 choices. Once you figure out the top 10 vote getters, you ask everybody to rank those 10 in order of their preference. Once that is tabulated, you have your top 10 picks. Then you have another poll of the remaining 50 to get your next 10.

I'd prefer it to be drawn out anyway. As bad as the cubs are, I think it should probably end the day before college football starts.
