The good news is both injuries sound relatively minor, and sounds like they could end up missing 2 starts a pience, hopefully. Id very much like to see Chris Carpenter given the other spot, even though he isnt on the 40 man. Not too excited about what Ive seen from Diamond. Wonder what this does to the Iowa rotation. If they do call up Coleman and Diamond does this put Carpenter back in the rotation? Do they promote McNutt?

What was the pitching order in Iowa? Can they get each of these guys a start before calling them up?

Iowa wasn't scheduled to start until tomorrow. Coleman will probably throw some sort of limited outing/side session in prep for his start on Sunday. If the other pitcher is getting called up from Iowa, they can start in Iowa tomorrow to be ready for their start in the majors on Tuesday.

We'll be fine here. I don't see either pitcher missing more than 3-5 starts, which means that's 6-10 games where we'll have to use Coleman and whoever else. Not a big deal.

I suppose Cash and Wells could be out longer, but more than anything these sound like precautionary moves made at the beginning of a long season. Thank God neither injury is considered serious.

LOL SILVA. If he had just shut his mouth, he would have been the #4 starter after 5 games.

If they bring him back I will kick a kitten.

If not Russell, bring up Alberto Cabrera and let him take a couple of turns in the rotation. Just please don't waste this opportunity on Thomas Diamond.

Projected rotation schedule, assuming as much normal rest as possible for 1-2-3 and limiting starts for #4/#5, over the next 14 days:

4/6: Dempster

4/7: OFF

4/8: Zambrano

4/9: Garza

4/10: #4 (Coleman)

4/11: Dempster

4/12: #5

4/13: Zambrano

4/14: OFF

4/15: Garza

4/16: Dempster

4/17: #4 (Coleman)

4/18: Zambrano

4/19: #5

4/20: Garza

4/21: OFF

So, assuming Wells and Cashner are out the minimum 15 days, the Cubs would need to use Coleman twice and a starter other than Coleman twice, or use Garza on short rest on the 19th and use Wells on the 20th, the first day he'd be eligible to come off the DL.

What do you have against Diamond? He did alright last year in limited starts. Why not give him a shot?

Gordon W says Russell is in the mix for the Tuesday start.

I think I'd like this more than Diamond. There aren't a whole lot of better options right now.

We need him in the bullpen though. Too bad Jackson is suffering from his mysterious injury.

Something like that. It nothing aginst Russell, but hes a relief pitcher. Its what he is. as much as it sucks to lose 2 starting pitchers who happened to look great to the DL, they should use the opportunity to give someone a look see who has a future as a starter. After all, thats how Randy Wells ended up in our rotation.

Yeah, both sound, hopefully, like they're precautionary moves early in the season more than anything else.

What? He was horrible last year. An ERA over 8 as a starter with a WHIP around 2. He was slightly better in the bullpen but not much.

The only guy that really makes sense is McNutt, and I think it's way too early for him to get a start at the big league level. Carpenter isn't stretched out, so he'll only be brought up to fill Russell's spot in the bullpen if Russell is headed to the rotation.

Also, Russell came up through the system as a starter. He pitched extended innings in the spring, is already on the 40 man roster, and can swing between the starter role and bullpen. It makes a whole lot of sense for him to make a start or two.

Problem is, we dont want McNutts clock to start ticking just yet. and is Russell really stretched out either? We really should have done a better job stretching guys out.

Wasn't Russell in the mix to win the #5 slot pretty late in the spring? It's not going to be a huge deal to stretch him out to get some spot starts as the Cubs' #5.

Im I the only one who wouldnt be surprised to see Jeff Samardzjia get a start or 2?

No, but if you're talking about guys who aren't stretched out then Shark is in a much worse position than Russell. He and the Cubs approached everything going into this season like he was going to be in the bullpen.

He had three starts, one of which he went 6 with 3 earned runs and 10 k's. The other two starts were 3ip 5er, 4ip and 4er. Those numbers are pretty bad and I think the first start is more prominent in my mind. However, he only has three starts under his belt and everyone is writing the guy off. I'd like to see he and Coleman get called up for a couple starts.
