I guess someone will have to explain to me why it's necessary to be at 10 at all times while we are allowed to extend beyond our roster for the major league draft. What's the difference?
I don't think it's necessary; I was just pointing out that's what the rule was last year. I agree that the key is really for rosters to be legal by the start of the season.

As far as Sale is concerned, all I remember is that he was a 2010 amateur draft pick who was called up to the White Sox during the season and was picked up by Navin. I don't recall whether he went through waivers when called up or was already considered to be a free agent; maybe Navin recalls.

Every player added to the CBS database clears waivers at the beginning of the season or whenever during the season when they get added to the DB. So if Sale were only added by CBS when he got promoted, then he would have passed through waivers at that time.

However, if he were added by CBS right after the draft, then he would not have been subject to waivers upon reaching the majors.

Prospects should be available to be drafted by others - there is no reason you should have more than ten at any time. Unlike the major league portion, this is easy to control and reasonable.

well i was hoping someone would draft a non-2010 amateur draft guy so that i knew my plan was okay - i was hoping to draft a guy who is still a prospect without major league experience and didn't see on any rosters. randall delgado from the braves. is that an acceptable pick?

Yes. The draft isn't limited to those taken during the 2010 amateur draft. Even if he did have major league experience he'd still be fair game if he still had minor league eligibility.

It looks like you should be able to draft Randall Delgado.

Not many picks so far in this prospect draft.
I think this is bound to go slower than the regular draft because you can't queue players and use autopilot like you can during the regular draft.

I just don't see it as being as reasonable as you suggest.

And as I look over your very own roster, I see that you have at least 2 minor leaguers stashed on your major league roster. Are you going to drop those guys if they don't make the big league teams out of spring training? Matt Dominguez has never played a major league game in his life, and Chris Carter was a September call up who did very poorly in his call up.

There is absolutely no guarantee that either of those guys will have jobs to start the season. By my count, that currently gives you 11 minor leaguers and someone has to be cut. And it also means you can't draft anyone else unless you drop someone. Do I want to play that card against you? No. Do I want to police every other roster just like I just did yours? No.

The easier answer is to just let people draft however many people they want to draft. Some will probably just skip their picks instead of having to make decisions later.

I too have players that I might promote if they make the major league team. So does Navin with Desmond Jennings and probably every other manager. Maybe they won't elect to promote them on day 1 of the season, as you can technically leave them in the minors as long as they don't exceed the at bats or innings.

It's just not as black and white as it might seem, IMO.

I might also point out that I need an extraordinary amount of minor leaguers in this draft to fill the guys I traded to you and to the guys I will promote. I need at least 5 players. If anything, I'm allowing the prospect draft to become weaker for my later picks when I allow some managers to hold onto more than 10, but I'm okay with that when considering it's the probably the best way to establish a ruling for this particular issue. I just don't feel like looking at every roster after every pick to make sure someone dropped a player in exchange for drafting one.

If the rest of the league is that passionate to do that, I elect you all the roster police and I say have at it! Besides, I'm leaving for Vegas on Wednesday and won't have much internet time until Tuesday of next week.

I'm in that position with Ka'aihue. I'd like to leave him on my minor league roster to start the season, but if Morales starts the season on the DL as now seems almost inevitable that might affect my decision. It would be nice to be able to make that decision by the start of the season rather than now. Also, I'm not really sold on the fairness of making a prospect immediately available for drafting if dropped by another team. If a manager drafting in the middle of a round drops a player managers drafting after that would have an unfair advantage over those who have already drafted before the player gets dropped.

FYI, i'll be on travel during the next week, but i think most of the area i'm travelling in has 3G and i'm bringing my BA prospect handbook with me, so hopefully if it's my turn to pick i won't hold things up too much.

Best way to get my attention today if it becomes my pick is to PM me.
Posted
I think as a general rule we should send a PM to the next person up after making our picks. Since the draft isn't on CBS there won't be automatic notifications as with the regular draft.

Is the prospect draft snaking or not?

I assume it is; I think it was last year. It wouldn't be fair otherwise.

I don't remember how it was done last year but I agree that snaking is the fair way to go.
