Cant find a link right now, but Ive read or heard multiple reports that the Giants are considering dumping Barry Zito all together. Now dont get me wrong here, Im not suggesting that the Cubs go after him, although at league min, it would be hard to blame any team for taking a chance. Still, I dont get why theyd do that. They owe the guy another 65 mil through 2013. Now if I understand correctly, if they cut him, they eat that anyway. While Zitos been hugely dissapointing, there are enough teams desperate for starting pitching that theyd probably be willing to take him off the Giants hands, especially if the Giants are willing to eat all, or at least a good portion of his salary. If they're willing to pay the money anyway, why wouldnt they try to at least get a few solid prospects out of the whole mess? I bet the Yankees for one would be willing to send them a few prospects and a few million dollars.

If he gets cut, would anyone really be opposed to the Cubs giving this guy a chance? He probably wouldn't be worse than what else we would have as our fifth starter.

He's been worse than our fifth starter the last 4 years.

Honestly, even though they would have to pay a lot of his contract, Zito does have trade value. Why cut him when they could probably pick up a useful player if they would be willing to pay a large part of Zito's contract?

Gorzelanny, in 23 starts last year, 1.50 WHIP, 4.22 ERA, 1.81 K/BB

Zito, last 2 years, 1.349 WHIP, 4.09 ERA, 1.84 K/BB

A lot better whip, and slightly better numbers otherwise. Can't say he would have been our worst starter last year. 2 years ago, yes he would have been. This year, I would bet Zito would be better than Silva.

However, if Cash actually has a chance to win a rotation spot, I'd rather Zito not be around to possibly take it away from him.

•With Chris Capuano and Chris Young in line to win rotation spots, it all but confirms that the Mets will release Oliver Perez, says ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.

In related news, it looks like the Mets are about to finally cut Big Game Ollie. As opposed to Zito, I wouldnt recomend going near him for any amount of money.

for 300k? why not

League min is 414,000 for 2011.

Good GOD, how can these men afford to feed their families? With gas prices the way they are, some of them might not even be able to afford a yact.

The last 3 seasons, Oliver has a K/BB of 279/205 (1.36 Rate)

Yuck

And John Grabow has a K/BB of 139/90 (1.54 Rate)

Yuck.

For his career lefties have hit .264/.334/.379 against John Grabow (92 OPS+). Lefties hit .214 against Perez in 2010. Lefties hit .200 with an OPS+ of 69 against him in 2009. Finally, in 2008 they hit .158 with a whopping 50 OPS+ against him.

Lefties don't hit Oliver Perez. They never have. They probably won't in the future. He'd certainly be 10 times a better LOOGY type RP with the Cubs than Grabow. And if his "command"/velocity comes back you can slide him back into the rotation and reap the benefits. He doesn't also have to be a LOOGY, if we need someone to pick up garbage innings, he's perfectly capable of doing that, Grabow isn't. Will he get a starting gig somewhere else? I have no idea. If he does, I am sure he will take it. If he doesn't he'd probably be a useful lefty in any bullpen, ours included, and he will be VERY cheap. (Granted for us he'd take someone like Maine or Russell's spot, not Grabow but you see my point).
