Before the draft on Monday, I might need to let Rodelo adjust his roster due to some bad information I might have given him regarding Tim Stauffer. He asked me to double check his roster and I basically told him that Stauffer would count towards the cap since he has 5 different years of major league service time with his first year counting as an exemption.

For some reason, I was under the impression that once a player had burned an exemption that any service time in future seasons would also count as an exemption, but that's not how it's worded in the rules. It just says that an exemption is burned in any year that there are less than 50ab's, 5 starts or 10 relief appearances. Stauffer has two seasons mixed in between exemption years burned that wouldn't count under this rule.

If that is how the rule is to be, Rodelo should be able to pick Stauffer back up since it was I who told him his points count towards the cap. I realized this now after seeing that Juan must be counting Yovani Gallardo this same way as Yovani's second year did not eclipse any of those numbers in his 4 years of major league service. If Yovani counts towards the cap, that would put Juan's team over. If he doesn't, then Stauffer doesn't either.

I could have sworn that when we established this rule, it only pertained to players who had not yet burned an exemption, and that once a guy burned his first exemption, any future season with even one at bat or pitched inning in the big leagues would count as another season burned.

My understanding has always been that the three exempt years don't need to be consecutive if there are years in between when they didn't have the minimum PAs or pitching appearances to burn an exemption (that would be the case if a player misses the entire season due to injury or spends the entire season in the minors). I got an extra exempt year from Kelly Johnson a couple of years ago because he had missed an entire season with an injury. I think that was also the situation with Stauffer (TJS if I recall).

Based on the way the rules are stated, I'd let Roady pick Stauffer back up.

That said, I remember things the way BBB did.

I'm not talking about full seasons. BJ Upton was an example of missing a full season.

I also thought that once you started the exemption clock, any season with any at bats or innings pitched still counted against that player. I thought we only adopted that rule to protect the September call ups who get sporadic at bats and had exemptions counted against them.

I read the rule this way as well.

Brian,

Your impression was how the rule was initially but it was changed a couple years ago. The current reading should apply.

That's fine, but Rodelo needs to be able to add Stauffer back if he wants c

Thanks for looking at the Stauffer situation. I elect to leave him off my roster.
