Somehow I can't see Manny being too motivated when he is only making $2M a year. I don't think this will end well.

What? Why would how much he's making have anything to do with his motivation?

His history seems to indicate the amount he gets paid means a lot to him since he basically quit on the Red Sox and forced them to trade him when they wouldn't agree to give him the contract he thought he was worth.

Those aren't really similar situations

Pie wasnt blocked at all, they just ran out of patience too quickly. 2008 was a bad year for him to struggle, because we were favs for the divison, and didnt have time for him to train him on the job, so the options were to either let him waste away on the bench or go to Iowa. I think they made the right choice at the time. However, the next off season, shipping him off to Baltimore for next to nothing and then turning around and signing Joey Gathright was just idiotic. If they had gotten something, it ould have been one thing, but they just ended up with some pitcher who The Padres supposedly wanted as a piece of a Peavy trade, and we ended up flipping him to Seattle for Aaron Heilman.

I agree with that. Having Reed Johnson/Jim Edmonds made it an easy decision for the Cubs in 2008. I still think they should've kept him as Pie showed a big jump in production the last 2 years with the O's (98/93 OPS+ in 589 PAs compared to 52/63 OPS+ with the Cubs in 287 PAs) that he could've at least been a 4th OF (due to his defense and PR) and he's only gonna turn 26 next month. But if he would've stayed, Lou would've just ruined him or wipe out all of his trade value (not that he had much when they did trade him)... Signing Joey Gathright after trading Pie was probably the worst move I've ever seen from Hendry. I mean what was the difference between Gathright and Pie? Gathright had more speed? But that was when Hendry/Lou had to get more speed/lefties on the team. I remember they didn't want Gathright anymore so they traded him for Freel who did even worse than Gathright. I mean they could've kept Pie the entire time and never had that mess.

LOL seriously? This dude has his own catchphrase to explain away his bizarre, unprofessional behavior ("Manny being Manny").

Ramirez would be the very first guy I'd worry about mailing it in if he feels unappreciated or disrespected or whatever nonsense gives him an excuse to dog it like he has in the past.

I don't know why I bother with you anymore, but there's a pretty sizable difference with being angry about your current contract status at the tail end of a long-term contract when your current team shows little interest in re-upping vs. being angry about the 1 year contract you just signed 3 months prior. As I said the situations aren't comparable at all.

You said yourself that Manny's behavior is bizarre, he may go in the tank because the sun is too bright in Tampa. Maybe he'll decide he doesn't like the colors on the uniform anymore.

Potential "Manny being Manny" triggers:

* the sun

* uniform colors

* 90% paycut

he's probably not going to be that good because he's old and not on steroids any more. but i suppose if you meatballs want to think it's because he's not trying on account of taking a huge pay cut, then go ahead.

He's making more than just the $2 mil this year, for what it's worth.

2010 (if no opt out): $5M paid in 2010 and $15M in 3 installments of $3,333,333 each June 30, 2011-12, and $8,333,333 on June 30, 2013

So now we have reached the point on this board that when someone doesn't agree with your point it is now free game to call them "meatballs" or some other insult?

Now? That point was reached long ago.

This place would be great with some effective moderators that weren't afraid to put the handful of 10,000+ post bullies in their place.

This place would absolutely go to hell if people weren't allowed to put the "Aramis should bunt so the shitty players feel better about themselves" crowd in their place

That's being paid by the Dodgers, by the way.

So it's not just guys with 10,000+ posts. Weird...

Using insults and personal attacks? Wrong.

Feel free to disagree, respectfully.

(BTW if you walked away thinking I want Ramirez bunting, you failed to grasp my point despite me repeating it about a dozen times.)

Oh no, I got it. You want him to practice doing something you never, ever want him to do in a game. That makes way more sense

What does wanting Ramirez to bunt or not have to do with calling someone a meatball (whatever the hell that is) because he has the audacity to think that a guy that quit on his team already once in his career because he wasn't happy with his pay might possibly do the same again?

Between Manny, Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, and Jason Schmidt, Ned Colletti sure does like to pay guys big bucks to play for other teams, or in Schmidts case, not play at all.

Manny still OPS'd at .870 last year, and murdered left handers. No doubt in my mind he can still be an effective DH for them next year, it's just a matter of how much of his crap are you willing to put up with.
