Saw this from Phil Rogers (yes, I know) on the Tribune.

Kerry Wood's below-market signing with the Cubs is likely to be followed by a multi-year extension if he remains healthy in 2011. Pena is in the same position.

I was kind of shocked by the Pena bit.

pure speculation on the part of Rogers no facts here.

At some point, the Cubs are going to need a longer-term solution at first base. If Pena is extended in to 2012, it means they haven't found that solution.

If Pena plays well enough to get an extension to 2012 then I doubt it will be for just one year. He'll be looking for at least 3 years and we'll probably give it to him.

so the cubs would be interested in extending wood and pena if they were healthy and productive in 2011?

whoa, stop the presses

Seriously.

Plus, why would anybody doubt the possibility of a Pena extension. They have no impact bats in their system, nobody who could even potentially fill the spot, let alone be a likely candidate. If they don't extend him they will just go out in the market and find the next Pena.

I suspect that Tyler Colvin will also find himself starting a few games at 1st. Unless the Cubs have some money set aside for Prince Fielder, more than likely, the 2012 and beyond 1st base candidates will be Pena, Colvin, or 2012s version of Lyle Overbay or Nick Johnson. We really have 0 1st base prospects unless you consider 43 year old Blake Lalli a prospect, or perhaps Rebel Ridling, Jake Optiz, or Justin Bour who are sure to be in the same position as Lalli in a few years. He's not an impact bat at the moment, but Vitters still has the potential to be a very good bat and played some first in the AFL this year. And unless they are extended or traded, Fielder and Pujols will be free agents next year...

Free agents the Cubs will not be signing.

Pena has to be the odds on favorite. And if Vitters ever makes it it will be as a mediocre third baseman. I see virtually no possible way he hits enough to justify a move to 1B.
