Lance Johnson led off for a year or two for us didn't he?

I was always more of a Brian McRae fan, myself. He stole home once!

Yeah, I always preferred McRae too. While I hated to see McRae go, for some odd reason I thought we were getting Carl Everett back instead of Lance Johnson.

I played basketball against Brian McRae last year. He's rather large now. Doubt he can run anymore and I learned from Dusty you are just clogging the bases if you can't run.

2 things:

1. for the guy who says he's proud of the board is it because the OP isn't getting bashed by multiple posters?

2. all the McRae talk reminds me of the time my girlfriend and I were sitting in the bleachers for a game that he was playing (cf). After the game he was in Murphy's. I said hello to him and said, "(girlfriend), this is Brian McRae." She said, "It's nice to meet you, did you and (my husband) go to H.S. together?" Brian and I just laughed.

I've seen a number of coaches/players out and never approached one before or since. I really don't care too much what they have to say and I'm sure they care even less about what I have to say.

edit: I did go out with Randy Myers 1 time. It was me, my friend, my friend's sister (Marla Collins), and a friend of hers. I rememeber two things about that night. Randy wore sweatpants out to the bars and he told me that nothing beats playing in NYC.

Nope, it's merely because I'm happy that the vast majority of the board has caught up with the math behind the game and realize the idea of the prototypical leadoff hitter is usually a very bad idea.

Oh, absolutely.

What, no love for Tom Goodwin?

I was going to say I loved him for his clutch, extra-innings triple in the 2003 NLCS, but B-R says that was Glanville. How many bad CFs did that team have?

I just looked them up. That team had some awful players on it period.

2003 was lightning in a bottle. Sure was a hell of a lot of fun, though. Up until that game that shall not be named.

Not really, it was a team with absurdly good starting pitching in a bad division who managed to win some crucial head to head games down the stretch and get into the playoffs with 88 wins (bad division).

From there, the playoffs are a complete crapshoot and having great power pitching never hurts.

Ozzie Timmons got 3 leadoff PAs with the Cubs in his two years with them. And hey, he had a .500 OBP in those three plate appearances.

So he got on base one and a half times?

My math was probably off. He had a 1.000 OBP one year and a 0.000 OBP his second year and I just averaged them. With three PAs, it couldn't be .500 I guess.

Yeah, you still need to divide it by the total number of plate appearances in baseball over those two seasons.

Best hitter in the lineup should bat 2nd. I still don't understand the bizarre insistence on placing light hitting guys there.

Leadoff guy gets a bunt single, then steals 2nd. The 2nd hitter hits a groundball to 2B to move the runner to third. 3rd hitter knocks him in with a sac fly. What's so complicated about that?

It's not complicated. It's not smart either.

I don't think you understand. The 2nd hitter has to be able to ground out to the 2nd baseman to advance runners. That's baseball.

So that was our problem with Juan Pierre. We should have batted him second instead of leadoff.

Yeah, that occurred to me later, but I didn't take the math too seriously at the time. I'm terrible at math anyway (part of why I'm not better at analyzing and figuring out advanced stats).
