Despite some reports to the contrary am told by sources close to Tommy Tuberville that he still is going hard after the Miami vacancy.

 

It sounds like he still believes that Bo Pelini is a candidate for the Miami job, as well.

I heard Shannon also pulled him name from Kentucky after Muschamp took the job. It was always rumored that Mack wanted Shannon over Muschamp from the beginning but then he got the Miami job.

Would Thompson make a lateral move to Florida? It would seem that if Kirby Smart goes to UF as the DC, then Thompson would stay at UT. Especially since I believe Thompson and Dooley were good friends prior to their time at UT as well.

 

Am I right in that or would Thompson make the move just to be a LB coach, especially if they add recruiting coordinator to his title?

Again this was just rumors from about a month ago that Smart was getting sick of Saban and thus the interest Texas would have had in him if Mack Brown retired and Muschamp took over. I don't know and regardless he will be in HC in less than 2 years anyways.

I like Will Muschamp as a coach and recruiter, but this is probably the ideal hire from a Tennessee fan perspective. He's the least proven of the candidates out there (though it's close between him and Mullen), so there will be as much questioning the move as there is praising the move.

 

Had they gotten Petersen, Petrino, Patterson, Stoops, etc., it would almost be a certainty they'd have succeeded. With Muschamp, there's question.

Can you have less control of a defense than you have under Saban? Saban seems to be a pretty extreme micromanager, making me think being the DC on his staff is purely title-only.

I don't think Thompson would make a lateral move at all, just not sure that Smart will either.

 

I will say that this hire is going to set off a greater domino effect than maybe any other could have. The Miami hire will be interesting to watch, and the Michigan situation could also set off a huge domino effect, but this one is going to affect several coordinator positions at several schools, imo.

Especially in the SEC. If a Harbaugh move to Michigan happens then it gets really crazy.

So, Texas may lose a boatload of coaches (including Applewhite now) and replace their OC and DC with Jim McElwain and Randy Shannon, respectively. In turn, Alabama could be replacing both their coordinators if Smart goes to UF and McElwain lands in Austin.

 

I've heard that Tuberville is no longer in play at Miami (of his own volition), but if he still is, that will cause some other changes around the south (Eddie Gran at FSU, for example.) Same with Mullen, if he gets the job. And with Malzahn likely leaving Auburn (for Vandy? Miss. St.? Texas Tech?), that's going to open up another coordinator job in the SEC.

 

RIchRod throwing his name into the mix just makes this a very intriguing offseason.
