the lightning's goal differential was even worse a week or 2 ago, at like -8 or something.

i keep waiting for them to crach, but it never happens. everytime they start to slump, they go on a streak. i have no idea what to make of that team.

it's too bad they don't at least have a decent goalie to mask their bad d. ellis/smith are atrocious, and roloson isn't the answer.

some low seeded team is going to luck out by getting them in the first round

and yes, im still pimping stamkos for 60

fun with goal differential:

-tampa is 3rd in the nhl in points and their goal differential is even (lousy defense/goaltending)

-los angeles has the best differential in the pacific division, and is in last place (11th in the conference). the team with the worst differential, anaheim, is in 2nd place and 5th in the conference.

-florida has a differential of +52 on ottawa, and just 7 more points.

other fun:

-colorado is 4th in the league in goals scored, and has a negative differential.

-three teams are undefeated in shootouts - los angeles (5-0), buffalo (4-0) and colorado (3-0).

-two teams have not won a shootout - ottawa (0-3) and minnesota (0-4). edmonton has been particularly bad as well (1-7).

-the western conference is 102-58-27 against the east. the east is 85-74-28 against the west. columbus (15-19-4) and st louis (14-18-5) have been lousy against the west and great against the east (8-2-1 and 8-2-2, respectively). edmonton is 6-4-1 against the east and 9-22-7 against the west.

Is Goal differential a historically accurate way to determine points in the NHL? Is it possibly more inaccurate now since a team gets 2 points for a OT/shootout win?

Anyone going to watch the all star game? Would kind of like to see Toews, Kane and big buff on the same line again but I guess they're still pretending that Buff is a defenseman.

everyone once you're done watching the replay of bruins-habs, watch the replay of isles-pens. the isles dressed some minor league goons, got a huge lead and then spent the rest of the game trying to beat up max talbot for a clean hit in a previous game. i hate the pens, but man the isles have been a complete embarrassment in this game.

I just watched the highlights on Sportscenter. Reminds me of minor league games that I've been too in the past.

will move this from the 'hawks thread since it's really off topic:

I know it is not a great draft class coming up this season, but I am still not sure that this is a good move for Philly. They are in a tight cap situation and as Truffle has already said could probably use a goalie.

we're okay cap-wise for this year, and next year we'll have zherdev coming off the books. leino is UFA next year, and whether we can keep him really depends on the TV deal and how much the cap goes up. we could use a goalie, but our team as currently constructed does not have the cap room for a top-flight goalie, we're too good to trade just draft picks for a strong goalie (assuming that there are any even available) and trading guys like van riemsdyk, giroux, coburn, etc would just weaken the team in front of the goalie. so it's not a bad strategy to build a very strong team with mediocre goaltending; it got us to the finals last year and the hawks won the cup with a guy who was not great.

Big trade for the Blues today, they traded Eric Johnson, McClement, and a 1st rounder to Colorado for Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk and a 2nd Rounder. The first round pick is protected if its a top-10 pick though.

I really like this trade, EJ might have the most upside of anyone, but Stewart instantly is in the conversation with Backes as the Blues best forward, and Shatternkirk is a rookie defensemen averaging almost a point per game.

I was surprised to read about this trade. I am not sure what to make out of it.
