Ignoring games in hand, which are very important of course, but Calgary and Anaheim, the 9th and 10th teams in the west play tonight.

This means that if the hawks do not get at least 1 point tonight, they will find themselves out of the playoffs at the end of the night.

I'm pretty sure that since the hawks last played on Thursday, every single thing that occured has gone against the Blackhawks interests. Plus, after today the Hawks have another 2 days off between games, so (again ignoring games in hand), the Hawks will surely be playing catchup from 9th or 10th place even if they win tonight.

This is how it could look if my extremely pessimistic projection pans out, the next time the Hawks step on the ice after today:

4. Phoenix 93 75
5. Nashville 88 74
6. Los Angeles 87 74
7. Calgary 86 75
8. Dallas 85 72
---------------------
9. Anaheim 85 72
10.Chicago 84 72

And considering how everyone in this race has been lights out lately, and considering some of the matchups going on, its not a stretch that this would happen if we lost tonight. It's probably not as bad as it seems. Calgary will continue to have 3 more games played than us, so at only 2 points ahead of us, we might as well have their playoff spot.

YES!!!!! Beautiful execution on the power play! Campoli with his first Hawks goal! 2-1 lead with 6 mins left....good opportunity to get at least 1 point.

Was flipping between the two Hawks games tonight so only saw parts of this one, but it didn't seem all that intense of a game. Who cares though, huge points.

Hope Sharp is okay.

I should mention one negative from tonight. Sharp left in the 1st with an injury and didn't return. Not sure the severity yet.

Yeah I was stuck with the Phoenix broadcast, who were more preoccupied with their ownership situation than the game. God I hope that team moves to Winnipeg.

WGN didn't give any updates on Sharp?

They said it was a leg injury but didnt know much else other than that he was out for the game.

$%$%$^ Anaheim beats Calgary in OT. I swear it seems like every [expletive] game between playoff contenders has ended in OT/SO lately

This race is really bunched up. Despite the win, the Hawks are just 1 point away from 9th place, and that's Dallas, who is even with the Hawks in games played.

4. Phoenix 89 +2
5. Chicago 86 0
6. Los Angeles 86 0
7. Nashville 86 +1
8. Anaheim 85 0
----------------------
9. Dallas 85 0
10.Calgary 84 +2

That's all true, but what you can focus on are winning your games. Don't count on any breaks. Last year 7 teams in the west were over 100 points.

All that said, the Hawks will get 10-15 more points. They'll make the playoffs.

Let's ignore what seeding you might want for a moment. If you look at this as 95 gets you in... Here's what everyone needs:

4. Phoenix, 6 points in 8 games. 98.68 points estimated. (9.68 points = 8 games x 1.21 ppg for the season)

5. Chicago, 9 points in 10 games. 97.9 points estimated. (11.9 points = 10 games x 1.19 ppg for the season)

6. Los Angeles, 9 points in 10 games. 97.9 points estimated. (11.9 points = 10 games x 1.19 ppg for the season)

7. Nashville, 9 points in 9 games. 96.6 points estimated. (10.6 points = 9 games x 1.178 ppg for the season)

8. Anaheim, 10 points in 10 games. 96.8 points estimated. (11.8 = 10 games x 1.180 ppg for the season)

9. Dallas, 10 points in 10 games. 96.8 points estimated. (11.8 = 10 games x 1.180 ppg for the season)

10. Calgary, 11 points in 8 games. 93.04 points estimated. (9.04 = 8 games x 1.13 ppg for the season)

Conclusions?

1. Calgary is in deep trouble. They need to win 6 of their last 8 to get in (or accumulate similar point levels via OTLs). They play the Kings, Sharks, Oilers (x2), Blues, Avalanche, Ducks and Canucks. That'll be tough. Very tough. I think they won't make.

2. That leaves 5 spots for 6 teams. Final seeding will be tight, and I think strength of schedule will play a big role.

i don't understand the point of saying that and ignoring games in hand.

Thats just how I look at it. Being behind the pace still means you need to make up those points. If the Bulls were 49-19 and the Celtics 50-19, I would say the Bulls were a half game behind Boston but have played 1 less game. It's a big part of the equation no doubt, but being 2 points behind a team with a game in hand still requires them to make up those points.

basketball is different. there aren't any ties and it go purely by win-loss

i just don't get the point of saying "they're out of the playoffs right now" about a team if they had 2 games in hand on the 8 spot.

if the hawks were down 1 point to the flames with 2 games in hand, would you say calgary is ahead of them? i wouldn't. the games is hand are just as important as the overall point total. neither means anything without looking at the other.

the point total means nothing until all the games are played. what's important is the record itself. if you have 2 games in hand and are only down 1 point, you have the better record despite trailing in points.

If the Hawks were down 1 point to Calgary with 2 games in hand I'm certainly going to say that the Hawks are ahead. Temporary the Flames are ahead because they've accumulated more points than the Hawks. When the Hawks make up those games and take the lead, then they will move ahead and be considered ahead of the Flames.

In what world are the Flames ahead of the Hawks?
