Looks like Rusin only went 2.

Yeah, he threw 24 pitches, so i wonder what happened?

On a better note, Wallach and Raley each had decent outings.

Yeah, I saw that, too. Hope Rusin is okay.

That's two pretty good outings in a row for Wallach. I can understand, after being traded for the first time, it can take you a couple of games to get comfortable. I'm interested to see how he does the rest of the way.

Luis Liria is coming off of two really nice outings, and he's added a third tonight. Over his last three appearances, he's gone 12 innings, allowed 11 hits, 2 runs, struck out 18 while walking 1. I look at him as an age appropriate starter at Peoria next season.

It's a tad early for it, but that gets me thinking about how next year's rosters will look. Depending on who goes north, Iowa's pitching could be filled with some actual prospects next season. Archer, Carpenter and Samardzija all have control issues to work on. Given Carpenter's injury setbacks and how late the Shark came to pitching full time, their ages don't bother me so much. Jay Jax and Coleman will still be young for the PCL, that's five pretty good ones right there.

McNutt would likely headline in AA with age appropriate or younger carry-overs Dolis, Rusin and Cabrera filling out the rotation with possibly Brooks Raley on the back end.

Rhee, Searle, Wallach and Whitenack will all be 22 and should be joined in Daytona by Nick Struck who's really come on lately. Jung, Antigua and Batista are also possibles.

I could see Jung staying in Peoria unless they like the idea of keeping him and Hak-Ju Lee together for comfort sake. Liria should have a shot and the newly acquired Robinson Lopez should repeat low-A at least to start the season. Add '10 draftees Hayden Simpson, Cam Greathouse and Brett Ebinger, '09 3rd rounder Austin Kirk, Cuban signee Juan Yasser Serrano and even guys like John Mincone, Tarlandas Mitchell and Larry Suarez. It should be interesting next season at Peoria.

Boise would have plenty of younger guys like the Wangs, who will both be 20 next year along with '10 4th rounder Hunter Ackerman, high school draftees Austin Reed and Ryan Hartman who will both be 19, various guys from the DSL and the '11 draftees.

And that doesn't even include the reliever prospects like Kurcz, who could be moved to the rotation.

All the Cubs need is just one or two of those guys to hit each year. This truly is a numbers game, ain't it...

Esmailin Caridad with his first outing back following his injury. He didn't do so well for the AZL Cubs, but hopefully he can regain his prospect status.

The Cubs scouts seem to do a pretty good job finding guys in like the independent leagues or Mexican league and turning them into major league possibles. Austin Bibens-Dirkx was signed out of the Golden Baseball League (I'd never even heard of that) and Caridad was signed in the Dominican after pitching in Japan. Anybody else fit this catagory?

It's way too early for this but...

Iowa: Jackson, Coleman, Archer, Carpenter, Chen (Rusin would be an option)

Tenn: Rusin, McNutt, Dolis, Cabrera, Raley (Rhee would be an option)

Daytona: Rhee, Whitenack, Wallach, Jung, Struck (Searle, Antigua & Bristow would be options)

Peoria: Kirk, Simpson, Lopez, Greathouse, Kim (Wells, Reed, Yao-Lin Wang, Marcos Perez, Luis Liria and Eduardo Figueroa are options)

i was pretty shocked and delighted he didn't have to undergo TJS, it seemed like a near-certainty with everything that happened

good day for relievers, it'd be great to get some of the Smit, Maine, Harris types into our bullpen and contributing soon

On Rusin, taken out for precautionary reasons for possible oblique or rib-cage ailment.

Thanks, Bruce. Better an oblique or rib-cage problem than arm or shoulder.

You think they may start Kim in Peoria over Arizona or Boise? I guess they did with Rhee, but that's pretty rare for them, isn't it?

Well, I believe the original plan for Lee was to start at Peoria before his Tommy John surgery. Since Kim got $1.2 million, I think he probably will be advanced as Rhee if he shows up healthy. It wouldn't be a big disappointment if he started at Boise but I don't think Mesa is likely since no Korean kid has yet to start there (Rhee debuted at Peoria, Lee, Ha, Jung and Na debuted at Boise).

By the way, as far as Rusin goes, do we think of him as a lefthanded version of Casey Coleman or do we think he has more upside than that? I know being a lefty helps at least a bit and he does have better K rates to this point. But, does he have any upside whatsoever higher than a back end of the rotation type at this point? I'm asking this partially because when I either make rankings or look at others, it interests me to see where they value that type of guy......

Yeah, Rusin certainly has more upside than Coleman (and a higher floor too). He has better stuff than Coleman. Not only is Rusin's K-rate much better than Coleman's, he walks fewer people too and he has good sink (to be fair, so does Coleman). To me, Rusin's ceiling is a #3 starter while Coleman is a #5 starter at best. On top of that, I think Rusin could be an extremely effective reliever in the bigs but I doubt Coleman can be much more than a middle reliever.

Maybe this is worth noting, maybe it isn't, but I seem to recall that the cubs liked to make sure there were a few other people who spoke korean when deciding where to place everybody, so that the new guy would have an easier time adjusting.

You're certainly right though they were willing to push Kyung-Min Na to Boise even though Dong-Yub Kim was rehabbing in Mesa. Na is probably going to be at Peoria next year and Dong-Yub Kim at Boise so Jin-Yeong Kim should have a teammate at either level.

Hopefully the Cubs aren't done signing Koreans this year - last year, they signed 2 and they signed 3 in 2008 so 1 this year would be a bit of disappointment.

I'm still waiting to see where the kid Boras signed is going to be headed to. But, if I remember correctly, he's not finishing high school until late this year, or maybe even in January or so.

His name is Sung-Hyuk Han. You know, I wasn't sure if he was a junior or a senior in HS when I read the article about him hooking up with Boras.
